LOCAL historian, photograph collector and Voice reader Barrie Doney has no shortage of pictures and stories from Cornwall’s past, which he shares with Voice Newspaper readers every week.

This week’s photograph shows an image of an animal winch in Lostwithiel.

Barrie says of this photograph: “This is the animal winch that was in one of the slaughter houses in Lostwithiel. In 1889.

“There were 11 butcher shops in the town of Lostwithiel and in the 1930's there were five, however, there is only one today. There were four butchers shops in Lerryn in the late 1800's.

“How diets have changed or is it now replaced by ready meals and Microwave cooking? This hoisting winch has now been moved from the roof down to ground level, but is still in in the original building.”
