LOCAL historian, photograph collector and Voice reader Barrie Doney has no shortage of pictures and stories from Cornwall’s past, which he shares with Voice Newspaper readers every week.

This week’s photograph shows an image of Pinnock Tunnel.

Barrie says of this photograph: “Years ago before Dr Beeching used his axe and closed a lot of the railways it was possible to use this tunnel. You could catch the train at Lostwithiel and then via Golant, Fowey, Par, St Blazey and beyond finish up at Newquay.

“The line was closed & ECLP took out the line or buried it in tarmac and installed traffic lights and overhead lighting for lorries carrying clay between Par and Fowey docks.

“Now millions are being spent installing a new line to connect up some of the venues again. There are times during the year when the tunnel is open for cyclists to ride through it. This is the view at the Ship Inn end.”
