REDRUTH director of rugby Richie Kevern admits tomorrow’s trip to promoted Devonport Services (2.30pm) will let him ‘see where we are as a squad’.

The Reds opened their National League Two West campaign with a resounding 61-10 thrashing of new boys Bournville last weekend which saw the Cornishmen run in nine tries, all but one of which were converted by fly-half Joe Cummins.

Plymouth-based Devonport were well beaten at Taunton Titans last Friday, but their Rectory home is a notoriously difficult place to go and rarely lose in front of their own supporters.

To make matters even more interesting, Redruth lost 11 of their 13 away trips last year, winning just once, and Kevern knows if they are to avoid another season looking to stay out of the relegation picture, that must improve.

However, he was quick to praise his side’s performance last weekend which included braces from man-of-the-match Sam James, winger Jack Counter and scrum-half Sam Bray.

He said: “It was a good result to start the season and it was nice seeing the hard work on the training field transfer into games. The continuous pressure we were able to put on Bournville really did make it difficult for them to get a foot into the game and ultimately be out of the race come half-time.”

With former skipper Edd Pascoe and Sam Stevens missing, the Reds had a new-look back-row last weekend which included debutant Will Symons at openside-flanker and young No.8 Finn Wolstencroft, however Kevern was delighted with their efforts.

He said: “I thought the back-row went through a lot of work which shows the mentality they have, while the bench also brought good energy to allow us no drop off.”

Services’ sole season at Step Four was two years ago, but after edging out Topsham in a thrilling title race last year, are eager to try and find their feet.

But Kevern, knows the Reds need to be picking up points.

He said: “Devonport is a tough place to go and will be a real challenge for us. For me this where I’ll see where we really are as a squad to find out if we can take a performance away from home and to a place like Devonport where it won’t be easy.

“I’m sure they will be keen to get a winning start to the home season and we will need to match that!”

There are two changes to the matchday squad. Former Camborne youngster Finn Love, now at Champ Rugby side Cornish Pirates, has been brought in on loan and starts at full-back for Luke Johnson who drops to the bench, while Plymouth Albion’s Scotland Under-20s loosehead-prop Max Surry has also joined on a short-term deal and starts on the bench which will be reduced from seven to five before kick-off.
