TODAY we are in Truro, the county town of Cornwall, as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.

Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Cornwall is a long county, shaped a bit like a triangle of cheese, that generally narrows as you move west.

“Truro is in the western half of the county, but more or less at the centre of a circle formed by larger towns such as St Austell, Newquay, Redruth, Camborne, Penzance and Falmouth.”

Truro is a worthy capital of Cornwall. The city’s skyline is dominated by the spires of its beautiful cathedral which was completed in 1910.

The narrow streets around the cathedral are most pleasing and the city centre has a good mix of retail outlets. The city also hosts regular markets.

Truro, which is on the mainline railway, is home to the Hall for Cornwall, the county’s main entertainment hub, and the Cornwall Museum & Art Gallery with its fascinating exhibits.

Park and ride services operate into the city centre from the west and the east. Meanwhile, to the south of the city centre, Boscawen Park, with its open spaces and range of leisure facilities, sits beside the Truro River as it makes its way to join up with the River Fal and flow into the English Channel.

Next time we will be visiting the towns of Redruth and Camborne, which along with villages including Pool and Illogan, join together to make the biggest urban conurbation in Cornwall.

Our lovely tour around the fabulous county, taking in well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from brilliant beaches, rugged moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to welcoming towns, pretty villages, mining heritage sites and visitor attractions.
