TODAY we are in the historic town of Liskeard as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.
Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Our lovely tour has taken us all round the sometimes wild and remote coast of Cornwall and has followed the inland boundary with Devon along the tranquil Tamar Valley.
“Now, as we head west again, we are in Liskeard, a town I know well, having worked there for a significant part of my newspaper career.”
Liskeard in South East Cornwall was at the centre of a mining boom, for copper, tin, lead and silver, in the 19th century.
Some in the town benefited greatly from the wealth created by the extraction of valuable ore in the surrounding countryside.

Fine properties and public buildings were constructed in Liskeard and can still be admired today.
The mines themselves were abandoned after they had been worked and numerous ruins bear testament to an industrious past.
Liskeard and District Museum is an interpretation point for the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

Liskeard is also home to Stuart House, a grade II* listed medieval townhouse that Charles I stayed in during the English Civil War.
The town is on the mainline railway and has a delightful branchline to Looe.
Next time we will be in Minions, on Bodmin Moor, the highest village in Cornwall which was developed in the 19th century to provide homes for workers involved in mining and quarrying.

Our fascinating tour around the county, taking in well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from brilliant beaches, rugged moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to welcoming towns, pretty villages, mining heritage sites and visitor attractions.
