TWO sites pointing to Cornwall’s long history feature today as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.

Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Cornwall, thanks to its geography, was a place apart in the past and, to some extent, it still is today.

“The remains of Iron Age hillforts across the county serve as reminders of the Celtic communities that shaped the landscape more than 2,000 years ago.

“Other relics from the Middle Ages show how times had changed.”

Roche Rock, whose Cornish name is An Garrek, has long been regarded as a special place in Cornwall. For instance, in 1933, the annual meeting of the Gorsedd of Cornwall (Gorsedh Kernow), whose bards promote Cornish culture, was held in the shadow of the outcrop.

The towering granite feature, on the outskirts of the village of Roche, is linked with legend and folklore and has also been used as a film location.

The chapel on the outcrop is dedicated to St Michael and is thought to date from the early 15th century and to have been a pilgrimage site in the past.

Four miles to the north west of Roche is the Iron Age hillfort of Castle-an-Dinas, one of the largest and most impressive in the county. The climb to the top is rewarded with great views on a clear day.

Next time we will be visiting Truro, the capital of Cornwall, where the skyline is dominated by the spires of the city’s beautiful cathedral.

Our lovely tour around the county, taking in well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from brilliant beaches, rugged moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to welcoming towns, pretty villages, mining heritage sites and visitor attractions.
