DANCING and aircraft feature today as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.

Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “We are in the historic town of Helston, in the west of Cornwall, between Penzance and Falmouth, as we begin to near the end of our exploration of the county.

“I have a number of connections to Helston and have enjoyed visiting the town over the years.”

The town, at the northern end of the Lizard Peninsula, is best known for its Flora Dance, a day-long celebration which takes place in early May each year.

The town becomes packed with visitors who flock to watch the townspeople dancing through the streets, going in and out of houses and shops.

The dancing takes place to the lively brass band tune, the Floral Dance. Senior members of Helston Town Band play the tune nearly 1,000 times across the day and walk around 16 miles!

Helston is home to RNAS Culdrose and there’s a viewing area from which you can watch military aircraft coming and going.

A notable structure in the town is the Grylls Monument, dating from the 1830s, which remembers former mayor Humphry Millet Grylls. Meanwhile, the town’s Coronation Park has a large boating lake.

Next time we will be visiting Trengwainton Garden, run by the National Trust near the village of Madron, just north of Penzance, and the nearby Lanyon Quoit which is also looked after by the National Trust.

Our lovely tour around the county, taking in well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from brilliant beaches, rugged moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to welcoming towns, pretty villages, mining heritage sites and visitor attractions.
