A HEADTEACHER in Newquay has urged parents to be vigilant following concerns about an online trend that encourages students to engage in organised fights between groups from different schools.
Gemma Harries, the head at Newquay Tretherras, has written to parents and carers about ‘school wars’ so they can discuss online safety with their child, and encourage them to report anything concerning.
The trend “appears” to have originated in London and is spreading across the country. Rules include being “violent” and using compasses, metal combs and rulers.
A number of dates have been shared online suggesting planned “rounds” of activity, but no specific locations have been identified.
Ms Harries said: “We have been made aware, via the Safeguarding Children Partnership and local police, of an emerging online trend known as “school wars.”
“This trend encourages young people to engage in organised fights between groups from different schools. Images like the ones attached have been circulating on social media platforms.
“This trend appears to have originated in parts of London and has since been identified in Bristol and areas of North Somerset, with the possibility of becoming more widespread nationally.
“Round one is Friday, February 27, round two is Monday, March 2, round three is Wednesday, March 4, round four is Thursday, March 5 and the final round is Friday, March 6.
“Safeguarding remains our highest priority as is more effective when we work in partnership with you as parents and carers and the wider community, thank you for your continued support. If you or your child have any concerns, please contact the school so we can support you.
“We would ask parents and carters to remain vigilant, be aware of your child’s whereabouts and movements after school, speak with your child about online behaviour and personal safety and report any concerns to the school or police where appropriate.”
