REVELLERS will be able to enjoy Newquay’s nightlife more safely after extra funding was secured for the police.
Newquay BID, working in close partnership with Newquay Police, has been awarded funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), which will enable additional policing on Friday and Saturday nights, with extra police officers deployed over several months.
The business body has also secured further funding to purchase six body-worn cameras that will be made available to local businesses where there is a higher risk of harm, anti-social behaviour, or where intelligence gathering may assist police investigations. The use of body cameras will help provide clearer evidence, support prosecutions, and bring offenders to justice.
The police say the increased presence will provide vital reassurance to businesses, residents, and visitors to help keep Newquay’s streets safe during the busiest periods.
Newquay Inspector Steve Johnson said: “This funding allows us to provide additional targeted policing at key times, strengthening our visibility and ability to respond quickly.
“Being visible during these hours not only provides a deterrent to people intent on getting involved in alcohol related crime and disorder but also provides reassurance to women and girls who have every right to move around the town safely. Working closely with Newquay BID has been instrumental in achieving this.”
Newquay BID helps fund the Newquay Night Bus during the summer months, which helps people travel safely in and out of town during the night-time economy in the summer. The police reported a 50 per cent reduction in public order and sexual offences in Newquay while the bus was operational this year between May 24 and September 6.
Newquay BID also runs Shopwatch and Pubwatch radio schemes, including a radio loan scheme that allows new businesses to trial the system before committing.
Newquay BID manager Mark Warren said: “I’m extremely pleased to be working with Insp Steve Johnson and the Newquay Police.
“The initiative represents another strong example of the collaborative approach between Newquay BID and Newquay Police in making the town a safer place for everyone.
“We have a strong partnership focused on keeping Newquay safe. Alongside this new funding, we already deliver a range of initiatives including Shopwatch and Pubwatch radios, regular partnership meetings, and the Newquay Rangers, whose hours will be increasing to support the busy season and town events.
“We also operate the best CCTV system in Cornwall, working closely with the police to gather intelligence and protect our community, visitors, and businesses.”
Newquay has become the first town in Cornwall to operate the Best Bar None scheme, which supports licensed premises to provide safe, well-managed environments for both staff and customers.
Mr Warren said: “This reflects a strong commitment to joining up businesses across the town to look out not only for themselves, but for each other.
“This is a really exciting project, and we’ll continue to look for additional funding while building on this strong partnership. Together, we are creating a safer Newquay that can be enjoyed by all.”
