Prime Cattle

A modest silage making weather entry contained mainly prime and premium quality bullocks with the trade seeing more spark than in recent weeks helped by the levelling of dead weight prices and numbers reducing.

The hot weather also encouraging consumption, especially locally with the boost in the population by holiday makers and half term.

Top price per kilogram back close to the £4 mark with a super, well finished Limousin x heifer from Paul Julian of Summercourt at 395p/kg.

A cluster of steers and heifers within the 350p/kg to 368p/kg range with top steer at 365p/kg for a Limousin x from Messrs G W & H E Hawkey of St Wenn as part of their consignment of five shapey steers.

Another good vendor, Mr C Keam of Luxulyan sold the top value beast being a Limousin x heifer at £2491.

Cull Cows

A similar size entry of cull cows also met with a firmer trade, an equal split of beef and dairy types with several not farm assured seemingly making little difference in the price.

A weighty Friesian from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, topped the dairy types at £1875 (non FABBL) with the best of the beef types for a Blue x from Messrs C H Bird & Son of Hayle at 289p/kg and £2234.

Close behind a super Charolais at 280p/kg for Dunstan Farming of Mabe. Many more could have been sold on the trade and more are required.

Store Cattle

A solid trade for a smart entry which saw steers top at £2300 for a 2-year-old trio of Limousins on behalf of Messrs G W & H E Hawkey of St Wenn, Bodmin, who sold a further lot to £2020, whilst Messrs S & L Awdry of Trendeal, Truro sold a 21-month-old Angus steer to £2025.

Mr R Green of Bosullow, Penzance sold a 1½-year-old Hereford to £1920, Mr G D Thomas of St Ives sold a 2-year-old Angus Steer to £1840, and Mr M J Biddick of Withiel, Bodmin sold a fine bunch of six 2-year-old Charolais steers to £1835.

Younger steers to £1525 for a grand bunch of five 14-month-old stabilisers on behalf of Penhallow Farm Ltd of Ruan-High-Lanes, Truro followed by Messrs E T Noy & Sons of Porkellis, Helston at £1305 for their 14-month-old Simmental.

Smart 1-year-old steers in from Mr W J Kitto of Gwennap, Redruth realising £1305 and £1295, whilst 9-month-old Shorthorns from Mr H J Rounsevell of Kenwyn, Truro achieved £1220.

Heifers topping at £1925 for flashy Limos from Messrs W G & H E Hawkey who sold a further single to £1820, followed by a trio of 2-year-old Limos from Messrs J M, S K & J K Sawle of Gunwalloe, Helston at £1760.

Angus heifers from Messrs S & L Awdry selling to £1705, followed by a trio of 2-year-old Blues on behalf of Messrs H L Banbury & Son of St Ervan, Wadebridge at £1685.

Young heifers to £1615 on behalf of Laity Farms of Hayle who sold further smart heifers to £1480, £1380 and £1330.

A 3-year-old South Devon bull from Messrs M C Bone & Son of Madron, Penzance parted away at £2700, whilst Hereford cows and calves sold to £3,000 on behalf of Mr B Noye of Breage, Helston with further lots from the same vendor to £2950 twice and £2920, which was also achieved by Mr M J Biddick for his Hereford outfit.

Rearing Calves

A lighter entry of calves to report, as vendors are busy with field work but a firm trade still seen.

Top price to £605 for a month old Limousin bull calf from Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth, followed by a month old Hereford bull from J C & F C Tripconey Ltd of Mullion, Helston at £595 and a young Blue bull from Messrs R J, K M, A M & S E Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston tied at the same money.

A month old Limousin bull from Mr W H F Harvey of Lanivet, Bodmin parted away at £555, a pair of Hereford bulls from Messrs Tripconey tied at £520 and a young Charolais bull from Messrs L Wherry & Son of Sancreed, Penzance at £515.

Strong young Limousin bulls from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston selling away at £510 and the best young Angus bull from Wheal Plenty Farm Partners of Sinns Common, Redruth at £300.

Heifers topped by a smart month old Blue from Messrs Blee at £510, a same aged Blue heifer from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston at £490 and a month old Limousin heifer from Messrs Tremayne one bid behind at £485.

Messrs Bray saw another young Blue heifer away at £475, Messrs Blee back with a Blue heifer at £450 and Messrs Bray’s Limousin heifer at £425.

A 3 m.o Friesian heifer from Messrs K & M Ferris of Gunwalloe, Helston at £415 and the best Angus heifer to £305 from the Worden family.

A single pair of older 6 and 8 m.o bulls from Mr R G Rowe of London Apprentice, St Austell made £720 for a Blue and £710 for a Simmental.

Finished Hoggets

A fair entry despite coming to the end of the old season hoggs and a notable easing of the trade which saw prices similar to those seen in mid-April.

Dearest on the day was a single 66kg Texel from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge realising £190, purchased by J V Richards of Perranwell Station, Truro.

Heavy hoggs from Messrs M & S Baxter of Wendron, Helston and Mr R A Coade of Cubert, Newquay achieved £185 and £183 respectively, with an overall average per head of £152.

Mr G M Henwood of High Lanes, Camborne set the premium to 351p/kg for a pen of 50.8kg hoggs, followed by a handy trio of 43kg hoggs from Messrs C K Richards & Co of Grampound, Truro at 342p/kg.

New Season Lambs

A large entry forward, with the main flush of Spring lambs coming through nationally, and the heatwave impacting domestic sales the prime lambs have taken a knock this week.

Once again, the hot weather has taken its toll on the lambs with the leaner and light lambs less sought after.

Topping at £200 for a pen of 48.6kg top drawer lambs from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

This was followed by the first pick of Master Henry Edmonds lambs at £195.

Setting the premium at 445 p/kg were a smart pen of 42.6kg lambs from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

With the Festival now underway the cull ewe trade has eased back this week in line with the National and regional trend. A larger entry forward with an overall average of £147/head.

Top call of £189 for a strong trio of Suffolk Mules from Mr G W Coon of Mevagissey, St Austell.

This was followed closely by a super black faced ewe from Messrs M & S Baxter of Wendron, Helston at £187.

Zwartbles to £177 from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas, St Columb and £176 again from Messrs Baxter.

Texels to £177 for Mrs S Scholes of North Country, Redruth; £170 again for Messrs Baxter and £169 for Mrs S A Scholes.

A single ram forward again for Messrs Hooper selling away at £164 for a Zwartbles.

Sheep (2T) selling to £180 for a Texel from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge followed by a strong single from Mr S Bucknell of Kestle Mill, Newquay at £176 and a trio of Texels from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay again at £176.

Store Sheep

Prices easier on the week in line with the finished trade. That said, a very good run of stores forward.

A quality consignment of Dutch Spotted store lambs from Messrs M & S Baxter of Wendron, Helston leading the way and with pens selling to £135 twice, £134, £130 twice £126 and £125.

A good pen of stores from Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan, Newquay sold away at £128. Medium and large stores averaging £130.50.

An Alpine Wether and an Old English billy goat from Ms C Coombs of Penzance sold for £115 apiece with a pen of month-old kids at £30 apiece.
