Prime Cattle
A good entry with a similar trade to last week and lots of super quality but heavier cattle forward.
Top price awarded to Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay for his 765kg Limousin steer at 351p/kg (£2,685), with a pair of good Limousins tied next at 350p/kg being a 787kg steer from Messrs J Lutey & Sons of Grampound Road, Truro at £2,755 and a 576kg heifer from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro.
Another pair tied at 348p/kg; one from Mr Julian at £2,676 and one from Mrs J Julian at £2,770.
Three animals tied at 342p/kg comprising a 755kg Limo steer from Messrs Lutey at £2,582, a 635kg Limousin heifer from Messrs Gay at £2,172 and a 676kg OTM Blue steer from Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro at £2,312.
A cracking run of heavyweight Limousins from J B Old Farms of Treyarnon Bay, Padstow saw a fast trade with prices at 340p/kg (£2,530), 338p/kg (£2,640) and 332p/kg to name but a few.
A good trio of bullocks tied at 330p/kg; being an Angus from Messrs S & L Awdry of Ladock, Truro, a Charolais from J B Old Farms and a Shorthorn from R M Farming & Co of Sticker, St Austell.
Cull Cows
Cows looking a fast-paced trade with a lift in the prices.
Top to 336p/kg for an Angus cow from Mr R J Trezise of Morvah, Penzance, followed by an Angus cow from Messrs K P & A Sowden of Constantine, Falmouth at 298p/kg and a Limousin cow from Mr Trezise at 293p/kg.
Agricola Growers Ltd of Antony, Torpoint saw their Devon cow part away at 288p/kg, another pair of Anguses from Mr Trezise at 280p/kg & 277p/kg and a pair of cows tied at 270p/kg; one from Mr A Taylor of Nancegollan, Helston and another from Mr A J Jelbert of Mitchell, Newquay claiming top pounds-per-head of £2,276.
Less dairy types to report to a top call of 240p/kg for a Friesian cow from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay, an Ayrshire cow from Mr D R Hair of London Apprentice, St Austell at 217p/kg and a pair of Friesians from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro at 212p/kg and 208p/kg.
Store Cattle
A short entry as is typical for Royal Cornwall Show week, though a stand on trade with all looking well sold.
Quality 27 month old steers in from R M Farming Co of Sticker, St Austell achieved £2,160 for Shorthorns, £1,995 for Herefords, £1,970 for Simmentals, £1,930 for Limousins and £1,770 for Devons, whilst a single 23 month old Limo from Mr S P Bache of Mount Hawke, Truro, realised £1,835.
1 ½ year old steers in from Messrs H M, C S & M A Rowe of Ruan Minor, Helston sold to £1,580, £1,560, £1,555 & £1,510, whilst the best of the younger steers achieved £1,600 for both Mrs J C Williams of St Clement, Truro and Messrs A M & V R Pascoe of Gweek, Helston.
Heifers to £1,570 on behalf of Messrs Jelbert Brothers of Newbridge, Penzance, followed Messrs Rowe at £1,510 & £1,420.
Young heifers to £1,420 for a classy trio of South Devons from Messrs Pascoe, followed by 13 month old Blues from W P & J Jenkin Ltd of St Martin, Helston at £1,320 & £1,260.
Cows & calves selling to £3,100 on behalf of Mr A J Jelbert of Mitchell, Newquay and a 13 m.o Pedigree Simmental bull to £2,220 for Mr K Thomas of Wendron, Helston.
Rearing Calves
A light Royal Cornwall Show week entry of calves, but a firm trade for those presented.
Top price bull calf to £565 for a 2½ m.o sired-up Angus from Mr W R Davey of Probus, Truro, with another Angus bull at 3 weeks younger from the same stable at £545.
Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston marketed their 2 m.o Limousin bull at £535, a young month-old Blue bull from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay at £455 and a 2 m.o Angus bull from Messrs N J Cox & H Floyd of Tregony, Truro at £255.
Heifer calves topping at £515 for a smart 2 m.o Limousin from Messrs Bray, a 2 m.o Blue heifer from Messrs Sweet at £455 and a pair of Hereford heifers from Mr Davey at £435 and £395.
A run of young Limo heifers from Messrs M P Varcoe & Partners of St Wenn, Bodmin realised £355, £340, £330 and £325.
Finished Hoggets
A much lighter entry than has been seen in previous weeks, but a revived trade which saw the strong heavies marketing well over the £200 mark once again.
A grand 73.00kg single from Messrs W E & A Pearce of Troon, Camborne topped the day at £236.00, bought by L C Farms Ltd of Hatherleigh, Devon, followed by a fleshy 67.00kg single from Messrs C D Greenaway & Sons of St Issey, Wadebridge which realised £229.00.
A smart trio from Mr S C Collins of St Newlyn East, Newquay parted away at £220.00, who also set the pace at 427p/kg with a handy 44.00kg single.
New Season Lambs
A good entry forward for the beginning of June, with a large proportion of fresh butchers’ lambs and storming trade to match.
A significant lift in the trade since the beginning of the week, seeing an overall average of £197/head.
A top call of £237 for a smart pair of 53kg Charollais x Texel lambs from Messrs. C D Greenaway & Sons of St Issey, Wadebridge, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
A cracking run of consistent blocky lambs from Messrs P T R & P E Jones of Crantock, Newquay, saw their 45.8kg lambs sell at 476p/kg to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
Also high in the averages at 469p/kg were 45.5kg shapely Texel crosses from Messrs C H P Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge, also sold to J V Richards Ltd.
Cull Ewes
An outstanding trade in the cull section this week with an overall average of £180.
Ewes and two-tooths of all types in exceedingly high demand and many more could have been sold on the flying trade.
Top call for cull ewes of £232 for a grand pair of Texels from Mr A S P Wright of Penhallow, Truro.
These were followed by a shorn Charollais from Mr D J A Eyles of Ladock, Truro sold for £228. Further Charollais to £217 for Messrs W H Morgan & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay; £186 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro; and £176 for Messrs T B Mitchell & Partners of Idless, Truro.
Further Texel to £215 for Mr D J Tremain of Bridge, St Columb; £196 & £185 for Messrs C H P Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge; £181 for Messrs J E Nicholls & Partners of Kea, Truro; and £180 again for Mr Wright.
Suffolk to £209 for Messrs W E & A Pearce of Troon, Camborne. Zwartbles to £203 again for Messrs Morgan. Mixed Suffolk & Texel Mules to £201 again for Mr Wright. Suffolk Mules to £196.50 again for Messrs Mitchell.
Composite ewes to £183 for Messrs S & S A J Rickard of Devoran, Truro.
The trade for two-tooths was off the clock, with an overall average of £186 and topping at £236 for a huge single Texel from Messrs Nicholls. Suffolk 2T to £223 again for Messrs Pearce.
Further Texel 2T to £218 again for Messrs Morgan. Zwartbles 2T to £216 for Mr VR Barrett of Baldhu, Truro.
Crossbred 2T to £216 for Mr SG Collins of St Newlyn East, Newquay. Charollais 2T to £194 again for Mr Collins.
Store Sheep
A very light entry and many more could have been sold on the trade.
A super pen of forward, close to finish lambs from Messrs T F & D J Crapp of Helston sold to £173.00, followed by a single from Mr V R Barrett of Baldhu, Truro at £160.00.
Double couples in from Hoskin Partnership of St Austell sold to £300.00 for a full mouth North Country Mule x outfit.
