Prime Cattle

A smart and sizeable entry of 36 Prime Cattle this week, topped at 368p/kg (£2,399) for a 652kg Blonde heifer from Mr R H Eddy of Tehidy, Camborne, followed by a 629kg Limousin heifer from Mr C Keam of Luxulyan, Bodmin at 360p/kg (£2,264) and a Limousin heifer from Chytodden Farm of Towednack, St Ives at 358p/kg.

Top price steer at 355p/kg for a Limousin from Mr Keam, a 643kg Blue steer from Mr M A Tylor of Lanarth, St Keverne at 342p/kg (£2,199) and a trio of bullocks tied at 340p/kg being a Limo steer from Mr Tylor and a pair of Limousin steers from Mr W J P and Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at the top pounds-per-head of £2,829 and £2,876.

A young bull from Mr I C Prowse of St Allen, Truro sold away at 345p/kg and another Blue steer from Mr Tylor at 335p/kg.

Cull Cows

Still plenty of good cows being presented, with the trade looking similar to the previous weeks.

Top to 330p/kg for a Limousin cow from Osborne Bros of St Just, Penzance, followed by a Limousin cow from Chytodden Farm of Towednack, St Ives at 311p/kg (£2,024) and a South Devon cow from Messrs W P L Cowling & Sons of Newquay at 290p/kg (£2,024).

A trio of Limousin cows from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston looked well sold at 288p/kg (£2,583), 282p/kg and 280p/kg (£2,503).

Osborne Bros back in the ring with their Limousin cow at 274p/kg, another from Messrs Bryant at 267p/kg and a South Devon from Chytodden Farm at 259p/kg.

Dairy types topped at 240p/kg for a Friesian cow from Mr M A Tylor of Lanarth, St Keverne, with his other Friesian cows at 238p/kg and 236p/kg and a pair of Friesians from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay traded at 230p/kg and 223p/kg.

Store Cattle

A limited entry although plenty of quality throughout and steers selling to a top call of £2300 for a cracking 27-month-old Simmental steer on behalf of Mr C Williams of Penzance who sold a further Simmental to £2050.

Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne sold a 27-month-old Blue steer to £1915, 1½-year-old Blues from Mr C G Andrew of St Austell achieved £1820 which was also realised by a trio of 20-month-old Angus steers from Mr W R Beard of Penzance.

R M Farming Co of Sticker, St Austell sold 2-year-old steers to £1810, £1780 and £1715, whilst Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell sold a pair of 20-month-old Blues to £1750.

Younger steers selling to £1850 for a premium 13-month-old Charolais on behalf of Mr C Weldhen of St Columb, who then sold young South Devons to £1800 and £1760.

An 11-month-old Simmental from Trevedra Farm Partnership of Penzance parted away at £1635, whilst Mr P Roberts of Penzance sold four 15-monthold Herefords to £1605.

Smashing 2-year-old Limousin heifers from Mr I C Prowse of St Allen, Truro achieved £2380 and £2240 twice, whilst Mr C Weldhen sold 22-month-old South Devons to £1700.

2-year-old Limousin heifers from Messrs N J G & A M Polglase of St Just, Penzance and Mr R T Dunn sold to £1635 and £1530 respectively.

Young heifers to £1880 for a flashy 14-month-old Blue on behalf of Trevedra Farm Partnership, followed by Mr I C Prowse for his pair of 14-month-old Limos at £1460.

Messrs A M & V R Pascoe of Gweek, Helston sold a 14-month-old Simmental heifer to £1210, followed by smart young Angus heifers from Messrs R G Keast & Son of Allet, Truro to £1160 and £1000.

A 3-yearold Limousin bull from Mrs J Julyan of Summercourt achieved £3900, whilst cows and calves from Mr P A Mann of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth realised £2200 and £2100.

Rearing Calves

This week’s entry was mainly comprised of younger calves, with a good trade seen for those on offer.

Top young bull calf was a month-old Simmental from Messrs L W & S Hosken of St Keverne, Helston at £545 and a month-old Blue bull from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston parted away at £530.

Young Angus bulls topped at £480 from Messrs Searle & Son of Rosudgeon, Penzance, Herefords to £475 from Mr W R Davey of Probus, Truro and a run of quality Blues from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro at £465 x 3, £460, £455 and £450 to name but a few.

Other Angus bulls from Messrs Seale & Son at £455 and £450, the latter tied with the best young Blue bull from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay at the same money.

Heifers to £550 for a 2 m.o Hereford from Mr Davey, with a pair of month-old Blues from Messrs Blee at £485 and £470 and Messrs George back with their month-old Blues at £460, £455 twice and £425.

Month-old Angus heifers from Mr Davey at £455, Herefords from the same farming at £400 and £375 and a young Blue from Messrs Sweet at £355.

A cracking run of stirks through the ring topped at £855 x 4 for a bunch of 5 m.o Angus heifers from Messrs A G Cave & Son of Rame, Penryn and Messrs S & L Awdry of Ladock, Truro topping the steer stirks with their single 6 m.o Blue at £800, with a 5 m.o Angus bull from Messrs Cave one bid behind at £795.

Finished Hoggets

‘No brag, just fact’ - The prices speak for themselves in the list below. Forget top prices, no hoggs sold for less than £169 seeing an overall average of £217 – being the dearest trade seen in recent years and in mid-May being the ‘tail-enders’ and mainly odds and sods Topping at £269 for 64.5kg Charollais from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

New Season Lambs

Good numbers coming forward and a fast trade, with strong demand for all on offer, with increased lamb numbers needed each week as buyers switch over from hoggs to New Season Lambs. Topping at £212 were a smart pair of shapely 46.7kg Dutch Spotted lambs from Miss L Monk of Kerley. An overall average of £198. Six pens of super quality lambs from Messrs C R Elliott & Partners of Portloe saw their best pick 52.5kg lambs sell at £211.50, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station. Setting the premium at 473p/kg were a cracking pen of 42kg lambs from Messrs T F and D J Crapp of Pemboa, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

The cull ewe trade was absolutely searing this week in Truro.

Ewe prices peaked at £257 for a single Texel from Mr J T Rowe of Lower Penponds, Camborne. Further Texel to £245 for Messrs T F & D J Crapp of Helston.

Suffolk to £232 for Messrs C H P Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge; £222 for Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey of St Keverne, Helston and £209 for Messrs R E Gilbert & Son of Ruan Minor, Helston.

Dutch Spotted to £227 for the best of a run of ewes from Miss L Monk of Chacewater, Truro with others to £219 and £214.

Horned ewes for Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay to £215 and £194. Charollais x to £201 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro.

£197 for Mr T Tremain of St Columb. Suffolk x Mules to £200 for Messrs W P L Cowling & Sons of Newquay; £196 for Messrs C J & S A Benney of Porkellis, Helston; £193 again for Mr Tremain; £190 again for Messrs Cowling and £185 again for Messrs Benney.

Poll Dorset to £192 and £189 for Messrs G W & H E Hawkey of St Wenn, Bodmin.

Only 3 cull rams forward this week, all Charollais and selling to £259 and £216 for Messrs R J Vincent & Son of Blackwater, Truro and £218 for Mr G Nickells of Fourlanes, Redruth.

Another good run of sheep (2T) this week as hoggs are maturing fast, selling to £245 for a smart pen of Texels from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge.

These were followed by a cracking Dutch Spotted 2T from Miss L Monk of Chacewater, Truro selling away to £220.

Store Sheep

A phenomenal entry of couples forward selling on a brisk trade from start to finish.

Seventeen premium 2T outfits in from Mr T Hall of Bodmin sold to £320 (£160/life) for singles and £400 (£133/life) for doubles. Further doubles from Mr Hall to £395 for four and £390 for four.

Mr W G Bray of Mullion, Helston sold a fine single to £325, whilst Mr J S Varcoe of Golant, Fowey and Mr T M Michell of Scorrier, Redruth sold doubles to £385 and £365 respectively.
