Prime Cattle

A respectable entry of prime cattle this week contained many superb quality and weighty bullocks including two particularly stand-out consignments of single suckled Limousins from vendors Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay and Mr M A Grigg of Lower Sticker, St Austell.

Topping at 395p/kg (698kg) for an outstanding heifer from Mr Grigg closely followed at 392p/kg (772kg) for a Limousin steer from Mr Julian. Four bullocks traded at in excess of £3000, the highest at £3200 for a Limousin steer from Mr Julian weighing in at 831kg.

Other heavy steers from Mr & Mrs J A Morphew of St Ervan, Wadebridge and Mr R A Coad of Cubert sold well, a Limousin x at £2410 and a Blue x at £2552 respectively.

In the heifer section Mr Grigg lead the way with the top price bullock for the day with others including lighter Limousin crosses for Mr M A Tylor of Lanarth, St Keverne at £2150 together with three lovely finished South Devons from Laity Farms of Gwinear, Hayle, all achieving the same price per kg and averaging in excess of £2400 apiece.

Cull Cows

Only 14 cull cow entries notified prior to market day and yet a superb entry of 47 forward with a full contingent of buyers and a sharper trade.

A super well-fleshed South Devon cow age heifer topped the beef type section at 305p/kg (711kg) for Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro.

Close behind at 301p/kg and the highest value at £2327 was a lengthy Limousin x from Messrs I D & S S Backway of St Eval, Wadebridge.

Only a penny behind at 300p/kg (723kg) was a Simmental x from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas, St Columb.

One of an entry of four well-fleshed proper Friesians topped the dairy types at 266p/kg (847kg) and £2253 for Mr M A Tylor of Lanarth, St Keverne.

Only 1 cull bull this week for Mr B Cowell of Gwealmayowe, Helston at 259p/kg.

Store Cattle

Numbers much improved this week seeing 180 pass through the ring and the trade looking sharp for all types.

Top of the day to £2000 for a framey 2 y.o Angus steer from Mr M Vian of Gorran, St Austell, with a bunch of five Hereford steers from the same farm at £1745 and his pair of Shorthorn steers at £1740.

Messrs B L Hearn & Partners from Whitecross, Wadebridge saw their best pair of 20 m.o Blue steers away at £1990 and a single at £1895, Messrs S & L Awdry of Ladock, Truro back again this week with their bunch of five 2 y.o Angus steers at £1985 and shapey 15 m.o Angus steers from Messrs A R, B & A Hosking of St Martin, Helston away at £1900 and £1890.

Neil Rowe Farming Ltd of The Lizard, Helston saw his best trio of 21 m.o Blue steers top at £1825, tied with the best single 27 m.o Hereford steer from Mr J C Trenerry of Callestick, Truro at the same money and a young 16 m.o single Hereford steer from Messrs R Lawry & Son of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth at £1760.

A smashing run of 12 to 15 m.o suckler bred Limousin x cattle from Mr P C J Bennetts of Sithney, Helston saw a keen trade with his best single at £1740 and a trio at 12 m.o to £1415.

Other young steers from Mr C P Rundle of Castle Dore, Par at £1690 for his 12 m.o Limousin and two 10 m.o Limousin steers from Mr M H Bird over from the Isles of Scilly at £1420.

Heifers certainly no easier to £1800 for the best Limousin from Mr Bennetts, with 15 m.o Limousins from Mr Rundle at £1710 and a pair of 2 y.o Blues from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro at £1585.

Five smart Angus heifers from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell at £1570 and £1540 and Mr P C J Bennetts back in the ring with more Limousin heifers at £1470 and £1420. A very young only 9 m.o Limousin heifer from Mr Rundle to £1400 and 9 m.o Charolais heifers to £1290.

A massive 3 year old Pedigree Aberdeen Angus breeding bull from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro sold away at £3150, another Pedigree Angus breeding bull from Messrs E J Pengelly & Sons of Porthpean, St Austell sold for £2780 and a young 12 m.o Simmental rearing bull from Messrs A P & S R Hooper at Castle-an-Dinas, St Columb at £2130.

Rearing Calves

Another lively trade in the calf section with a packed ringside of buyers yet again.

Messrs C J & J E Colwell of Creed, Truro saw their 4 m.o Blue steer top the younger section at £700, with a very smart month-old Charolais bull from Messrs L Wherry & Son of Sancreed, Penzance at £650 and a 3 m.o Devon bull from Mr T J Hicks of St Agnes, Truro at £555.

Messrs H M, C S & M A Rowe of Ruan Minor, Helston marketed their pair of month-old Hereford bulls at £540, tied with both a 2 m.o Hereford bull from Mr W R Davey of Probus, Truro and a 3 m.o Devon bull from Mr Hicks.

A pair of 2 m.o Angus bulls from Mr Davey at £530 and £520 and a month-old Blue from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston at £510.

Mr W H F Harvey from Lanivet, Bodmin saw his month-old Limousin part away at £500, tied with a month-old Simmental bull from Messrs Bray and a month-old Hereford bull from J C & F C Tripconey Ltd of Mullion, Helston at the same money.

A 2 m.o Blue bull from Messrs R G Denning & Son of Probus, Truro sold away for £455 and the best Blue bull from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro at £420.

Heifers to £520 for a smart month-old Blue from Messrs Bray, a month-old Charolais from Messrs Wherry at £500 and a pair of calves tied at £495; being another Blue from Messrs Bray and a 3 m.o Angus from Messrs Colwell.

Messrs Rowe back in the ring with their pair of Hereford heifers at £485, tied with a 3 m.o Devon from Mr Hicks at the same money.

A young Hereford heifer from Messrs F G Brewer & Sons of Fraddon, St Columb at £450, a young Blue heifer from Messrs George at £430, tied with a Limo from Messrs Bray.

A sensational run of stirks this week saw very keen bidding, topping at £1030 for a stunning 5½ m.o Charolais steer from Messrs T W & W T James of Sancreed, Penzance.

This was followed by a cracking run of 16 animals from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro, all ranging from 4 to 6 months old, with steer prices to £970 twice for Limos, £870 for a Hereford and £850 thrice for Limos.

Heifers from the same farming at £880, £875 x 4 for Blues and £845 twice for Herefords to name but a few.

Finished Hoggets

Still a few pens of old season hoggs coming forward and good demand selling to £205 for a pair of 61.5kg hoggs from Mr R A Coad of Cubert sold to L C Farms Ltd of Highampton.

New Season Lambs

Averages have eased on the week, in line with the National Averages, but overall strong trade for mid-June month.

A pen of Hampshire lambs from Messrs W P Cowling & Sons of Newquay out in front at £217.50 sold to McFadden’s butchers, St Just.

This was followed by a heavyweight Dutch spotted lamb from Miss L Monk of Chacewater, Truro at £213, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station, Truro selling the premium at 447p/kg were fresh first pick Beltex x lambs from Mr E Whiteman of Gorran, St Austell sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow, Penryn.

Cull Ewes

Another excellent, stand-on, trade this week as improved numbers saw cull ewes average £169 overall.

The Charollais ewes were out in front topping at £234 for Miss L Monk of Chacewater, Truro; £231 for Mr D J A Eyles of Ladock, Truro; and £206 for Messrs K & D McFadden of St Just, Penzance.

A good run of Texels and Texel x forward topping at £200 again for Messrs McFadden; £195 for Messrs J Lutey & Sons & Sons of Grampound Road, Truro; £194 for Mr J McFadden of St Just, Penzance; £194 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro; £193 for Messrs W P L Cowling & Sons of Newquay; £189.50 for Mr P S Best of St Newlyn East, Newquay; £189 for Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay; and £187 for Mr A S P Wright of Penhallow, Truro.

Suffolk Mules to £196 again for Messrs Cowling; £194 again for Mr Wright; £189 again for Mr McFadden; and £187 for Mr D J Tremain of Bridge, St Columb.

Sheep (2T) to £227 for a fantastic pair of Texels from Mr T Backway of St Eval, Wadebridge followed by a single from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay sold for £180. The overall average for sheep (2T) was £174.

Store Sheep

Numbers are short and many more could have been sold on the buoyant trade.

Topping at £158 were a pen of medium stores from Sturmans Livestock of Burlawn, Wadebridge, with another pen at £152.50.

Second were a good pen from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas, St Columb sold for £154.50.

Six sets of couples forward from Mr P R Sluggett of Grampound Road, Truro with mainly full mouth ewes.

Double couples achieved £345, £305 and £300 averaging £106/life. Single couples achieved £305 averaging £152.50/life.
