A good quality entry forward selling to a fast-paced trade.
Top to 400p/kg (£2,928) for a cracking 732kg Limousin heifer from Mr R H Eddy of Tehidy, Camborne, closely followed by a 743kg Limousin heifer from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 398p/kg (£2,957) and a thumping 770kg Limousin steer from Mr Julian selling away at 390p/kg and top pounds-per-head of £3,003.
A 629kg Limousin heifer from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro parted away at 384p/kg (£2,315), another Limousin steer from Mr Julian at 706kg and 381p/kg (£2,690) and Messrs Gay back with another Limousin heifer at 370p/kg (£2,464).
Cull Cows
A lift in the cow trade this week with a good quality entry of 50 presented.
Top cull cow to 348p/kg for a Limousin from Mr I C Prowse of St Allen, Truro, an Angus cow from Messrs R G, E J & G A Williams of St Martin, Helston trading at 318p/kg and a Limousin cow from Mr O Penellum of St Erme, Truro at 295p/kg, tied with a South Devon cow from Mr & Mrs P Tullett of Tregony, Truro at the same money.
A cow-aged Angus steer from Mr T C Allen of Roche, St Austell well in the mix at 297p/kg, a 695kg Charolais cow from Messrs E V Hosking & Son of Laity, Wendron sold for 272p/kg, followed by a Limousin cow from Messrs E J Richards & Son of Frogpool, Truro at 265p/kg.
Dairy types also to 265p/kg for a Danish Red cow from Messrs D C & W A Thomas of Tresillian, Truro, a Friesian from the same farm at 262p/kg, an Ayrshire cow at 256p/kg from Mr J D Hosken of Laity Moor, Truro and a Norwegian Red cow from Messrs Thomas at 253p/kg.
Store Cattle
A smart entry and lift in the trade which saw steers top at £2370 for a single 20-month-old Blue on behalf of Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston who sold further lots to £2240, £2205, £2160 and £2095, followed by cracking 2-year-old Limos from Messrs J & J Sawle & Son of St Agnes at £2360.
Further Limo steers to £2210 twice on behalf of Messrs Sawle, whilst a 2-year-old Limo from Messrs A J & S T Richards of St Keverne, Helston realised £2155.
1½-year-old South Devons to £2130 on behalf of Mr L R Pengelly of Budock, Falmouth, whilst Messrs R G & J M Prowse of St Allen, Truro sold 2-year-old Limos to £2095 and £2090 with the best of the younger steers thereafter realising £2065 for 1-year-old Limos on behalf of Messrs R G, E J & G A Williams of St Martin, Helston.
Further young steers from Messrs Williams to £2010 and £1940 thereafter, followed by 1-year-old Aberdeen Angus steers at £1770 on behalf of S H Ellis Partnerships of St Just, Penzance.
A pair of 13-month-old Limos from Mr D P Osborne of Nancledra, Penzance achieved £1710.
Heifers topping at £2280 for a 19-month-old single South Devon on behalf of Mr L R Pengelly, who sold a further heifer to £2130, whilst Messrs Sawle sold 2-year-old Limo heifers to £2160 and £2110.
Messrs R G & J M Prowse of St Allen, Truro, sold a 21-monthold Limo to £2130, whilst 1½-year-old heifers from Messrs Blee and Messrs W W James & Sons of Sancreed, Penzance achieved £2095 and £1880 respectively.
A smart Blonde heifer from Messrs P Kingdon & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay parted away at £1830.
Young heifers topping at £1790 on behalf of Messrs Williams, followed young Angus heifers from S H Ellis Partnership at £1580 and a pair of 14-month-old Limos from Messrs Bilkey & Bray of Tregony, Truro at £1400.
Rearing Calves
A smart entry of calves and stirks to report, selling away to what would be a fast trade.
Top 3 m.o Blue steer from Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston at £805, with a run of well farmed 2 m.o Blue steers from Messrs J R, P M & D W Treleaven of Trenarren, St Austell looking well sold at £755, £720, £690 and £655.
Topping young month-old Angus bulls to £630 for Mr A G Tilly of Crowlas, Penzance, with further 2 m.o Blues from Messrs Treleaven at £590 and a 2 m.o Hereford from the same farming at £560. 2 m.o Hereford bulls to £530 from Messrs K & M Ferris of Gunwalloe, Helston.
Heifers to £555 for a 3 m.o Angus heifer from Messrs Worden, a sweet young month-old Blue heifer from Mr J Wilkinson of Constantine, Falmouth parted away at £415, a month-old Hereford heifer from Wheal Plenty Farm Partners of Sinns Common, Redruth at £405 and a trio of monthold Angus heifers from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay at £385, £380 and £375.
A run of good stirks topped at £730 for a 5 m.o Angus steer from Mr J T Rowe of Penponds, Camborne, followed by a 5 m.o Angus steer from Nicholls & Co of Wheal Rose, Scorrier at £720, a 4 m.o Limousin steer from Mr Rowe at £710 and a 5 m.o Blue steer from Nicholls & Co at £705.
Nicholls & Co stealing the show in the heifer section with their trio of Blues from 4 to 5 m.o at £740 and £680 twice and a pair of 5 m.o Angus at £645.
Finished Hoggetts
A good entry of Hoggs forward.
Whilst not quite the dizzy heights of recent weeks, a very strong and respectable trade prevails.
A superb quality trio of 65kg butchers Charollais x Beltex hoggs topped at £201 on behalf of Mr J D Couch of Couchs Mill, Lostwithiel, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Heavyweight 61kg Texel hoggs from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval following at £194; and a stand-out single 63kg hogg from Mr & Mrs J Morphew of St Ervan, Wadebridge at £192.
New Season Lamb
A fiery trade and lift in the averages on the week. All types and weights in demand.
Topping the lambs at £195 were stocky 49.1kg Suffolk crosses from Mr M Horrocks of Cubert, Newquay sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
A trio of 43kg Charollais lambs close behind at £191.50 for Miss L Monk of Chacewater, Truro and a smart pen of 42.8kg Dorset lambs at £191 for Mr J S Varco of Golant, Fowey.
Two pens of sappy light-weight lambs from Messrs M & S Blake of St Stephen, St Austell saw his 37.8kg Hampshire lambs at 464p/kg, and 38.5kg Charollais crosses from the same farm at 453p/kg, both pens purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd.
Cull Ewes
Cull ewes were met with an absolutely searing trade this week in Truro, and many more could easily have been sold.
Topping at £270 and £264 were a superb pair of Texel ewes from Messrs Bawden & Morrison of Stithians, Truro.
Further Texel and Texel x ewes to £240.50 for Mr C J Allen of Penwithick, St Austell; £219 for Mr A Grange of Ruan High Lanes, Truro; £218 for Messrs R J Vincent & Son of Blackwater, Truro; £190 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro; and £180 for Caerhays Farms of Caerhays, St Austell.
Zwartbles to £221 for Mr T Watters of Breage, Helston; £189 for Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, Helston; and £182 again for Mr Watters.
Poll Dorset to £176 twice for pens from Mr D J Lobb of Little Polgooth, St Austell; £167.50 for Mr P Badcock of Ashton, Helston; £164.50 again for Mr Lobb and £160 again for Messrs Vincent.
Composite ewes to £174 again for Caerhays Farms and then £169 twice for Messrs Hext Farm Partnership of St Just in Roseland, Truro. Cull Rams to £226 for a Texel from Mr P Mann of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth.
Sheep (2T) to £190 for a Texel from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge; £189.50 for Charollais x from Mr N Ferris of Longdowns, Penryn; £171 for a Zwartbles x again from Mrs Baxter; £170 for a Texel from Mr & Mrs J Morphew of St Ervan, Wadebridge; £167 for Poll Dorset x from Mr W J Hosken of Manaccan, Helston; and £159.50 for a Suffolk from Messrs A J & S T Richards of St Keverne, Helston.
Store Sheep
A phenomenal trade from start to finish and many more could have been sold.
Store hogs to £169 for a strong single in from Hillside Farm Partnership of Chacewater, Truro, who sold further pens to £146, £139.50 and £138.50, whilst Mr D Wall of Ludgvan, Penzance sold quality types to £163 and £146.
Forward types from Messrs A J & S T Richards of St Keverne, Helston realised £157.50, followed by a trio from Mr C Matthews of Tregony, Truro at £156.
A tremendous run of couples in from Mr A Kemp of Tregony, Truro sold on a flying trade with singles to £298 (£149/life), £272, £259 and £255 and doubles to £370 (£123/life) and £360.
Messrs A J Pellowe & Son of Nancekuke, Redruth also sold a cracking single couple to £285.
