Prime Cattle

A good showing of Prime Cattle, with the trade holding up despite the dropping deadweight.

Top pence-per-kilo to 392p/kg (£2,650) for a strong 676kg Limousin steer from Mr C Keam of Luxulyan, Bodmin, followed by a Limousin heifer from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro at 390p/kg (£2,363) and a pair of bullocks tied at 382p/kg being a 733kg Limousin steer from Mr M A Grigg of Lower Sticker, St Austell at £2,800 and a 670kg Charolais heifer from Mr Keam at £2,559.

Another pair tied at 280p/kg being a heavy 775kg Limousin steer from Mr Grigg at £2,945 and a Limo heifer from Messrs Gay at £2,322.

Messrs Gay then sold their 608kg Limousin steer at 363p/kg and yet another good South Devon heifer from Mr Keam at 360p/kg (£2,351) thereafter.

Cull Cows

A similar story in the cull section, with a mixed entry being met with a good trade.

Topping at 316p/kg (£2,079) for a Limousin cow from Messrs C D & S C Rodda of Crantock, Newquay and a South Devon cow from Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb, Newquay at 295p/kg.

A Hereford cow from Messrs W O Brown & Son of Pentewan, St Austell parted away at 283p/kg and a South Devon cow from Messrs J R Stephens & Son of St Winnow, Lostwithiel one bid behind at 282p/kg.

Mr G Carter of Troon, Camborne saw his best Shorthorn cow away at 278p/kg, followed by another South Devon cow from Messrs Stephens at 272p/kg and another South Devon cow from Messrs Rodda close behind at 271p/kg.

Very short on Dairy types but topped at 228p/kg for a Friesian cow from Miss E R Ead of High Street, St Austell.

A shapey British Blue cull bull from Mr P Mann of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth flew away to 260p/kg and £2,119.

Store Cattle

A sublime entry of 311 stores through the ring and a cracking trade to match which saw steers top at £2280 for a premium pair of 22-m.o Limousins on behalf of Mr W G Piper of Newtown, Penzance.

An elite consignment of over 40 bullocks from Mr J E G Brewer of St Merryn, Padstow topped at £2100 for 2yo Hereford steers followed by a trio of 2yo Angus steers to £2000 and Herefords thereafter to £1990 twice, £1980, £1895 and £1880.

Messrs P G & K M Knight of Penstraze, Truro sold a super pair of 2yo Herefords to £1940, whilst a single 2yo Shorthorn from Mr T M Gwennap of St Levan, Penzance realised £1935.

Smart 1½-yo steers in from Messrs W O Brown & Son of Pentewan Road, St Austell and Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston realised £1920 and £1890 respectively, whilst Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb, Newquay sold a cracking pair of 2yo South Devons to £1860.

Younger steers trading to £1945 for a show stopping single 11m.o Limousin on behalf of Mr D Parkinson of Newmill, Penzance who sold a further young Limousin to £1720, followed by a pair of 13m.o South Devons from Mrs S J Tune of Tregonetha, St Columb at £1690.

Further good youngsters in from Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth at £1625 and Mr T M Gwennap and Messrs P G & K M Knight tied at £1620.

Heifers to £2120 on behalf of Mr W G Piper who sold further top quality 2yo to £2020, £1940, £1900 and £1780, followed by classy 1½yo heifers from Messrs A D & J A Bray at £1795, £1760 and £1745.

19-month-old Charolais from Mr K R Williams of Tehidy, Camborne achieved £1735, whilst a pair of 2yo Blues from Messrs G J D Champion & Son of Praze, Camborne parted away at £1685, which was also achieved by Messrs M J & R M Tremayne for their 20m.o Limousin.

Younger heifers topping at £1605 for a fleshy Charolais on behalf of Mr P Emery of Lamellion, Liskeard, followed by a sharp 10m.o Limousin from Mr D Parkinson at £1580, followed by a trio of 1yo South Devons from Mr P R Weldhen of St Columb, Newquay at £1450.

Smart 1yo heifers also in from Mr T M Gwennap and Messrs A M & V R Pascoe of Gweek, Helston to £1380 and £1345 respectively. Many cracking young heifers sold thereafter.

Rearing Calves

A smart entry of calves met with perhaps a slightly steadier trade, although still looking well sold.

A month-old Angus bull from Mr W R Davey of Probus, Truro took top honours at £600, followed by a month-old Hereford bull from Messrs A & B Pascoe of North Country, Redruth at £545.

Further Angus bulls from Mr Davey at £525 and £510, a month-old Limousin bull from Mr W H F Harvey of Lanivet, Bodmin at £485, tied with a pair of 2 m.o Hereford bulls; one from Mr Davey and one from Messrs J R, P M & D W Treleaven of Trenarren, St Austell.

Best young Friesian bull of the day to £385 from J C & F C Tripconey Ltd of Mullion, Helston.

Heifers topping at £470 and £395 for a pair of young Blues from Messrs Treleaven, another month-old Blue from Messrs C J & J E Colwell of Grampound, Truro at £375; the latter tied with a month-old Angus heifer from Mr Davey at the same money.

Other good young Angus heifers from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay at £370 and more from Mr Davey at £365 and £360 for a Hereford.

A short run of older stirks to £755 for a 5 m.o Limousin steer from Miss E Pascoe of Helston, and a same-aged Blue steer from Mr Harvey at £630.

Heifer stirks to £725 twice for a pair of 5 m.o Limousins from Miss Pascoe and £685 thrice for 3-5 m.o Blues also from Mr Harvey.

Finished Hoggets

Prices are buoyant and particularly strong demand for the heavies.

Selling to a top price of £196 for 58kg Charollais from Mr T Watters of Carleen, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

An enormous 87kg Hogg from Messrs E J Pengelly & Sons of Porthpean realised £192 and another from the same farm at £190. A single 60kg Texel from Messrs.

T B & M B Osborne of St Eval realised £190, sold to J V Richards Ltd. A pen of 50.8kg Hoggs from the same vendor sold at £189 to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

Prime New Season Lamb

A storming trade and high demand across the board.

Leading the way at £210 was a butchers choice single 55kg Charollais lamb from Mr T Bingham of Truro, sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

Close behind at £204.50 were a smart pen of well finished 47.9kg lambs from Messrs. W P L Cowling & Sons of Newquay, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Setting the premium at 482p/kg were 36.4kg Hampshire lambs from Mr T Blake of St Stephen, purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. More new season lambs could have been sold on the trade.

Cull Ewes

Continued flying trade for cull ewes again this week, topping at £225 for a Charollais from Messrs K & D McFadden of St Just, Penzance.

Further Charollais and Charollais x to £221 for Mr T Watters of Helston; £206 for Mr A Kemp of Truro; £205 and £178 again for Messrs McFadden; £173 for Mr A W Nicholls of Chacewater, Truro.

Crossbred ewes to £205 from Mr A S P Wright of Penhallow, Truro. Poll Dorset to £178 and £169.50 from Mr D J Lobb of Little Polgooth, St Austell.

Rams to £215 and £180 for Charollais from Messrs S J & D E J Worden of St Martin, Helston. Sheep (2T) to £183 for a Charollais from Mr J T Rowe of Lower Penponds, Camborne.

Store Sheep

A light entry but phenomenal trade with stores averaging £140 and selling to a top call of £158 for a strong single from Mr C J Allen of Penwithick, St Austell who sold further store hoggs to £146 twice, whilst Mr P Badcock of Helston sold a forward trio to £152.

A smart entry of couples which saw singles selling to £295, £255, £245 and £235 on behalf of Mr A Kemp of Truro, whilst doubles traded to a top call of £410 for a supreme Dorset outfit on behalf of Mr J S Varco of Golant, Fowey who sold a further Dorset double to £400 followed by Mr A Kemp at £345.
