Prime Cattle

A fair entry of 45 Prime Cattle, with an easier trade as to be expected with the recent dropping of deadweight prices, however the best premium sorts still realising more money than the equivalent.

Top pence-per-kilo to a smart 625kg Limousin heifer from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 395p/kg (£2,469), with a 612kg Limousin heifer from Mr W J P Julian next at 388p/kg (£2,375) and another 646kg Limousin heifer from Mrs Julian at 370p/kg (£2,390) thereafter.

A good weighty 747kg Limousin heifer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay traded at 362p/kg (£2,704) followed by the best pair of steers tied at 360p/kg; being two Limos from J B Old Farms of Treyarnon Bay, Padstow at £2,131 and £2,675.

A Limousin heifer from Mr P J Harvey of Coombe, Truro made 350p/kg, a 697kg Limousin steer from Messrs N J & J R Bennetts of Zelah, Truro realised 342p/kg (£2,384) and a pair of steers tied at 340p/kg, one from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro and the other from J B Old Farms.

Cull Cows

A total of 43 through the cull section, with trade holding up slightly better than the clean cattle.

The best from a run of good Stabiliser cows from Messrs J N & M Miles of St Mawes, Truro claimed the top two spots at 320p/kg and 315p/kg, followed by a strong 673kg Limousin cow from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston at 295p/kg.

A Simmental from W K Emmett & Son Ltd of Portscatho, Truro sold at 278p/kg (£2,074), another Limo from Messrs Bryant at 276p/kg and a Simmental cow from Mr B Cowell of Wendron, Helston at 271p/kg.

W K Emmett & Son Ltd back in the ring with another Simmental at 268p/kg, two more Simmentals from Mr Cowell at 260p/kg and 255p/kg and further Stabilisers from Messrs Miles at 257p/kg twice and 255p/kg.

Limited dairy types forward topped at 231p/kg for a Friesian cow from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay and a Friesian cow from Messrs P S & S H Hammett of Little Petherick, Wadebridge at 218p/kg.

A pair of hefty Limousin cull bulls from Messrs Bryant saw a good trade with their 1078kg animal at 230p/kg (£2,479) and his 1032kg counterpart at 210p/kg (£2,167).

Store Cattle

Another capital entry this week comprised almost entirely of younger types.

330 through the ring which saw prices top at £1945 for a fine pair of 23-month-old Limousins on behalf of Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb, Newquay, followed by grand 13-month-old Herefords from Mr P Johns of North Cliffs, Redruth at £1870.

Messrs R & J Bailey of Frogpool, Truro sold 2-year-old Limos to £1680, whilst Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell sold 1½-year-old Blues to £1670.

A colossal entry of 119 stores from Messrs G B & J G Ellis of Crows-an-Wra, Penzance saw their choice Herefords to £1635, whilst younger steers topped at £1645 for a premium pair of 13-month-old Limousins on behalf of Messrs B K & E L Piper of Sithney, Helston.

Mr D Pollard of Greenbottom, Truro sold young Herefords to £1630, followed by Messrs Piper again at £1580, with young Herefords thereafter to £1565 and £1535 on behalf of Mrs V Curtis of Tresowes, Helston and Mr R J Osborne of Fraddon, St Columb respectively.

Heifers topping at £1750 for a smart bunch of 2-yearold Herefords on behalf Mr J E G Brewer of St Merryn, Padstow who sold a further lot to £1640, followed by 2-year-old South Devons from Mr J C Ball of the same Parish at £1610.

Messrs R & J Bailey sold 1½-year-old heifers to £1490 and £1470, followed by Messrs T W & W T James of Sancreed, Penzance at £1435.

Young heifers to £1495 on behalf of Mr R J Osborne, followed by a single Angus from Mr R J Trezise of Morvah, Penzance at £1360.

A smart 14-month-old Simmental from Messrs A M & V R Pascoe of Gweek, Helston achieved £1270, followed by a trio of Blues from Mrs V Curtis at £1230.

A pedigree Angus bull from Mr W C Bottrell of Sancreed, Penzance went under the hammer at £3550.

Rearing Calves

Numbers looking tight in the calf pens, but a solid trade for those forward.

Top bull calf to a 3 m.o Hereford from Messrs L Wherry & Son of Sancreed, Penzance at £675, with their 2 m.o Charolais bull next at £580 and a month-old Limousin bull from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston well in the running at £525.

Young month-old Blue bulls from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay at £410 and £395 and Mr A Giles of Paul, Penzance with his month-old Blue bull at £405 and a Limousin at £340.

Messrs J A Sweet & Partners topping the young Angus bulls at £330, Mr J Wilkinson of Constantine, Falmouth with his young Angus bull at £320 and a run of Friesian bulls from Messrs M P Varcoe & Partners of St Wenn, Bodmin seeing a good trade at £220, £205 twice and £200 twice to name but a few.

Messrs Wherry also topped the heifers with their 2 m.o Charolais at £565 and a trio of Charolais heifers from Messrs J & S Trembath of Gurnards Head, Zennor at £490, £480 and £435.

Month-old Blue heifers from Messrs Bray at £430, a sameaged Simmental heifer from Messrs L W & S Hosken of St Keverne, Helston at £405 and a month-old Angus heifer from Messrs Bray at £395.

A run of 3 to 4 m.o Blue stirks from Messrs J A & J H Mann of Zennor, St Ives saw keen demand with their steers at £850 and £780 twice and heifers at £695 twice.

Finished Hoggets

A continued strong trade for old season hoggs with an overall average of £174/head.

A trio of Suffolk 77.3kg hoggs from Messrs R E Gilbert & Son of Ruan Minor, Helston topped at £196, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

A single 42kg hogg from Mr J C Trenerry of Callestick, Truro sold to 426p/kg.

New Season Lambs

A fiery trade for all on offer with an overall average of £186/head.

Selling to a top price of £194 for two vendors; firstly, for a smart trio of 44.6kg Texel lambs from Messrs C H P Powell & Son of St Ervan, Wadebridge and also for strong 51.6kg first pick butchers lambs from Messrs P T R & P E Jones of Crantock, Newquay, both pens sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Setting the premium at 479p/kg for shapey 37.6kg lambs from Mr T Blake of St Stephen, St Austell also sold to J V Richards Ltd.

Cull Ewes

The cull ewe trade continues apace, with an overall average this week of £173 across the board.

Leaner ewes in highest demand as always but all shapes and sizes making their money. Top this week were a pair of Texel ewes from Mr M Monk of Chacewater, Truro which realised £223.

Further Texel to £205 for Mr P T Ross of Underlane, Helston. Suffolk ewes to £205 for Mr K R Williams of Tehidy, Camborne; £205 for Mr S G Parkin of Whitemoor, St Austell; £193 and £188 for Messrs R E Gilbert & Son of Ruan Minor, Helston; and £187 for Messrs W E & A Pearce of Troon, Camborne. Poll Dorset to £204 for Mr D J Lobb of Little Polgooth, St Austell.

Charollais and Charollais x to £200 again for Mr Monk and £198 for Mr G W Coon of Mevagissey, St Austell.

Lleyn to £198 for Mr W D Pascoe of St Newlyn East, Newquay and £191 for Mrs B M Chapman of St Columb Major, Newquay.

Suffolk Mule to £190 again for Mr Pascoe. Rams to £216 and £210 again for Mr Pascoe. Sheep (2T) to £177 for Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan, Newquay.

Store Sheep

Another light entry and more needed to meet demand.

A very strong trade well in line with the finished section, selling to a top price of £180 for a large single from Hoskin Partnership of St Austell, who went on to sell another to £159.50.

Stores from Mr J Dedman of St Austell realised £146 and £132, whilst Mr & Mrs P Tullett of Tregony, Truro and Miss S Mannix of Ponsanooth, Truro saw their hogs to £138 and £136 respectively.

Cracking pedigree Lleyn single couples from Mr D and Mrs S Searle of Wendron, Helston looked well sold at £335.
