A CHARITY’s wish to open a new wishing well in Newquay has come true at Christmas.

Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club has unveiled the wishing well at Harbour Hill following the help of Bayly Builders in Newquay and Inox Stainless Steel & Aluminium Ltd in Threemilestone. Inox fabricated the stainless steel wishing well and Bayly Builders fitted it and built the stonework.

The charity decided it wanted to refurbish the former Newquay Round Table wishing well to collect money for local charities. Father Christmas was on hand to officially open the new wishing well.

Lion Phil Bunt said: “The original wishing well was established by Newquay Round Table, which no longer exists. After that charity finished the well fell into disrepair over quite a few years and became a bit of an eyesore.

“Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club applied to Cornwall Council to see if it could take over the area and rebuild a new wishing well.

“We got the agreement before Covid and following the generous help of Bayly Builders and Inox a design was agreed, and a final product has now been installed.”

Mark Bayly from Bayly Builders said: “It was a pleasure to get involved in this good cause.”

Matthew George from Inox added: “We wanted to support the local community and support the good work that Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club does both in the town and nationally.”

Jon Collins, the president of Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club, said: “We would like to thank Bayly Builders and Inox for providing the where with all to be here to finally open our wishing well.

“The wishing well has been a long time in the making. It was an initiative of one of our fellow Lions Lesley Baize who has suddenly passed away at the beginning of this week.

“We would have dearly wished for her to be here for the unveiling, but it is in her memory, and we encourage people to come forward and place any loose coins they have got in their pocket into the wishing well. That money will go to charities and local good causes within the Newquay area.”
