A NEW campaign has been launched calling for a zebra crossing to be installed on a busy road in Newquay.

Residents are appealing to Cornwall Council to put a crossing in place at Tower Road due to safety concerns.

Anna Nersveen, who started the petition on Change.org, said: “Navigating Tower Road has become a daunting task for many, particularly for those among us who face mobility challenges or are accompanied by small children.

“As a local resident, I've experienced firsthand the anxiety and difficulty that comes with attempting to cross this busy street without a dedicated pedestrian crossing.

“The absence of a zebra crossing on Tower Road not only deters community members from walking to town but also poses significant safety risks.

“With the ever-increasing traffic on this road, the need for a designated pedestrian crossing has never been more urgent. Parents with small children, people with disabilities, the elderly, and all residents deserve to feel safe while crossing our streets.

“Recent statistics indicate that pedestrian accidents are on the rise in areas lacking proper crossing facilities.

“We owe it to our community to prevent such tragic incidents by taking proactive measures.

“A zebra crossing will enable pedestrians to cross safely and confidently, reducing the potential for accidents and promoting a more walkable, friendly town atmosphere.

“Installing a zebra crossing is not just a simple infrastructure upgrade; it's an investment in our community’s safety and accessibility.

“The benefits span beyond physical safety, encouraging more residents and visitors to walk rather than drive, easing traffic congestion, and lowering pollution levels.

“We call upon the Newquay Town Council and local authorities to prioritize this pressing need and take immediate action. Our community is worth it, our safety is worth it, and our future depends on it.”
