FIREFIGHTERS have extinguished a wildfire at Porth near Newquay while crews continue to dampen down another large blaze at nearby Mawgan Porth.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service was called to a “significant fire” between the golf club and solar farm at Mawgan Porth at around 4pm on Tuesday, August 11.

The service warned that the incident was producing a significant smoke plume and urged people in the area to keep windows and doors closed and avoid attending the scene.

At around 4.40pm, firefighters also reported they were dealing with a separate wildfire in woods near Porth.

A spokesperson said: “We are responding to a fire in the open in woods near to Porth, Newquay. Crews are in attendance and dealing with the fire.”

People living close to the Porth incident were also advised to remain indoors with windows closed.

The Porth wildfire has since been confirmed as extinguished.

However, firefighters remained at the Mawgan Porth incident into Tuesday evening, working to bring the blaze fully under control.

An update issued at 10.14pm said good progress was being made and some resources were beginning to leave the scene.

Firefighters were continuing to monitor the area and extinguish any remaining hotspots.

A large number of crews and specialist resources were involved in tackling the Mawgan Porth fire.

Pumping appliances attended from Newquay, Padstow, Perranporth, Wadebridge, Tolvaddon, Hayle, Liskeard, St Columb, St Dennis and Bodmin.

The Wildfire Unit from Tolvaddon was also deployed, alongside water carriers from Helston and Liskeard.

An incident command unit from St Just and a welfare unit from Perranporth were also sent to the scene.

The latest update from the fire service said resources were being stood down as firefighters continued their work to ensure any remaining hotspots were extinguished.

The cause of the fires has not been confirmed.
