Unbeaten run away from home continues for Camborne

CAMBORNE made it a hat trick of away National One wins with a narrow victory at Sheffield, where the hosts had been unbeaten for almost two years.

Whilst celebrating a significant result, Camborne will also reflect on a number of opportunities that went begging in a game they dominated for long periods.

The Cherry & Whites gave a full debut to Jay Toogood on the right wing, whilst Canadian international lock Barnaby Waddell made a first start from the bench.

Beginning brightly only a forward pass ruled out an 8th minute Harry Larkins try, but the left winger was not too be denied the opener at the end of the first quarter. Centre Josh Matavesi and Fraser Honey combined delightfully to send Larkins flying over near the posts. Fly half Honey converted for 7-0.

The home side soon levelled with a converted try and the game remained tied at 7-7 until the closing stages of the half.

Camborne lost a ball at a lineout on the home goal line and after a length of the field attack Sheffield eventually mauled over for a converted score and a seven point interval lead.

The Cherry & Whites began the second period brightly. Keeping the pressure on, Camborne finally levelled on 54 minutes after full back Frankie Nowell crashed over with Honey adding the extras.

Though the Yorkshire side again edged in front through their powerful forwards, the visitors soon restored parity when Ben Priddey was driven over.

Going into the closing stages, a long range effort gave the hosts a try bonus point and the lead. Camborne, however, would not lie down and hooker Priddey duly charged over after a series of attacks. At 24-24, up stepped the experienced Honey to coolly slot the crucial conversion.

The five minutes remaining passed without alarm for the visitors who now look forward to their second home game of the season against London Scottish.
