NATIONAL LEAGUE TWO (WEST)
Chester 39 Redruth 28
REDRUTH’S long trip to Chester ended in defeat as the hosts ran out 39-28 winners.
The out of form Reds got off to a dream start as centre Jack Simmons crossed for the game’s opening try inside a minute which was added to by full-back Dean Wills.
However, the hosts dotted down themselves through Louis Beer’s unconverted try on five minutes.
Visiting skipper Edd Pascoe was sin-binned on 18 minutes, and with him off the field, the hosts took advantage as Dave Jones scored on 19 minutes. Sam Rogers added the extras.
Bagshaw was over on 23 minutes, but missed his own kick, however Chester continued to keep the points coming as Tommy Ellis crossed 10 minutes later.
At 24-7 down the Reds were in trouble, and three minutes after the restart the hosts grabbed a fifth try via Jarad Williams with Rogers knocking over a third kick for 31-7.
The best the visitors could do from here on in was to get a bonus-point, but to their credit they dug in well to do so, starting with hooker Jarrod Hambly’s score on 49 minutes.
Both sides made a series of subs in the sapping conditions, but the Reds gave themselves 11 minutes to get the fourth try when inside-centre Sam James barged over with Wills again adding the kick.
Bagshaw slotted over a penalty with four to play to guarantee a home victory, but Redruth’s long journey home at least came with a point as Ollie Darby crossed with two minutes to play with Wills knocking over his fourth successful conversion of the day.
