WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION (SATURDAY)
Street 1 Newquay 1
NEWQUAY extended their unbeaten run to seven games – six in the league – with a hard-earned point at the Tannery Ground on Saturday.
Centre-half Harry Downing headed the Peppermints into a 22nd minute lead which they held on to until 13 minutes from the end when Callum Laird equalised.
Without three of their most influential players in full-backs Jamie Edlin and Tom Moxham and striker Jack Bray-Evans, Newquay gave a very good account of themselves.
Boss Shaun Middleton made three changes from the side that had seen off St Austell 6-0 in midweek.
Ollie Butterworth came in at right-back, Johan Allen was Moxham’s replacement on the left, while Ross Fallens came into the centre of midfield for Harry Richards.
Since their 7-1 hammering of Ivybridge on September 17, Newquay haven’t looked back and must now be feeling like they belong at Step Five.
Manager Shaun Middlleton, who named himself on the bench, said: “The boys played well and worked extremely hard on Saturday.
“I felt we deserved all three points but unfortunately we couldn’t take our opportunities on the day.
“Fair play to Street, they also worked extremely hard; both goals were scored from corners.
“We were a bit light through illness in the team but the lads who did play, did well.”
Newquay now turn their attention to the FA Vase first round proper tie away to Hellenic League P remier Division strugglers Hallen next Saturday (3pm).
The Bristol side sit second from bottom having won only one league game in 11 this season.
