NEWQUAY Cricket Club have signed Australian all-rounder Tom Owen for next summer’s Cornwall Cricket League County Division One campaign.
The left-arm spinner and middle-order batsman, who plays First Grade for Merewether District CC in Newcastle, New South Wales, comes highly recommended from Toby Chillingworth, who made such a big impact at the Sports Centre in 2024 and 2025.
Owen will be expected to help the coastal outfit push towards the top four after a mid-table finish last term.
The club recently held their annual general meeting where it was confirmed former Cornwall batsman Adam Cocking will once again lead the first team, while Lachlan Brace has re-signed from Truro - and is set to keep wicket and bat in the middle-order.
Dan Ogden, whose appearances have been sporadic in recent seasons, should be available from June onwards, while there are further signings in the pipeline.
Chairman of selectors Matt Millward will lead the second team’s promotion charge in Division Four East.
They finished fifth in 2025 with eight wins and as many defeats from their 18 games, but with the first team hoping to strengthen, a challenge towards the top two will be the aim.
Tom Backway stays on as the thirds captain and like Millward, will hope to be at the right end of the table.
The fourths is all about providing the pathway between youth and senior cricket in Division Seven East, and once again Bruce Robinson is in charge.
Also the groundsman, Robinson has transformed the wickets at the Sports Centre in the last couple of years.
Katie Hooper will stay on as ladies captain having taken on the role when they restarted over the summer. They will play friendlies, while there are also plans for an under 18s girls team.
Senior nets will start on Thursday, February 10 and run for six weeks at the Cornwall Cricket Centre in Truro from 8pm to 10pm.
