FA VASE FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND (SATURDAY)
Newquay 3 Wendron United 2
JACK Bray-Evans’ late penalty sent the Peppermints into the next round after seeing off SWPL Premier West outfit Wendron United at Mount Wise on Saturday.
Newquay had secured their Step Six title back in April against the same opposition, but like the Dron, had several key men missing, meaning there were a number of young and inexperienced players on both sides.
The hosts dominated the play from the kick-off, moving the ball smartly around the pitch as Wendron looked to press.
But despite having the majority of the ball, Newquay could not press home their advantage as although wingers Louis Price and Rhys Simmonds were trouble for the Wendron full-backs, every time a shot or cross came into the box, it was either blocked or cleared.
Newquay’s perseverance paid off in the 40th minute when Tom Moxham put a corner ball into the box where Price flicked it on at the near post and captain Harry Downing rose to head the ball home from a yard out and give his side a 1-0 lead going into the break.
The second stanza began with Newquay again taking control of the ball and moving it well around the pitch.
Wendron are a team that scores goals and also began playing some nice football. They had a couple of attempts, one forcing debutant Ethan Elwell into making a great save to his left.
Although Newquay put pressure on the visiting defenders, it wasn’t until the 60th minute that they doubled their lead. Price received the ball just outside the penalty box from Phil Lowry before running across the box from right to left, and firing a shot back towards goal, beating Zach Telling to his left.
A 2-0 lead is never secure and a poor decision from Newquay’s midfield led to an easy Wendron goal. The ball was passed back towards Elwell, but striker Brodie Kemp had not been seen behind the defence and he intercepted the ball before finishing with aplomb.
Newquay continued to attack down the wings with Simmonds making some excellent runs down the left, but it was 2-2 with 10 minutes to play.
A free-kick from the left touchline was put into the box, and an unmarked Kemp flicked the ball home.
Newquay have let leads slip already this term and supporters were fearing a repeat, however they stuck to their principles and played the ball out of the back.
Deep into injury-time, the hosts won a corner and as it came into the box it wasn’t cleared away. The ball came to Lowry whose footwork deceived the defender who took his legs from under him.
Bray-Evans took control of the ball and calmly put it into the back of the net in the 94th minute to give Newquay a 3-2 win and set up an away tie at Cullompton Rangers on Saturday, September 20 (3pm).
