Bradleys Vinter Cup week one round-up
BOTH Charlie Kent and Scott Kellow struck centuries as the first round of group games in the Vinter Cup took place during midweek with seven matches taking place.
While holders St Just emerged 43-run winners over County One side Paul at Cape Road having been held to just 115-9, there were several other clashes involving Premier sides and lower-league opposition.
Camborne made the very short trip to Division Four West outfit Barripper, a village just a couple of miles from Warrior Park, and racked up 190-5 from their 20 overs led by county all-rounder Scott Kellow’s unbeaten 123.
The village outfit got off to a dream start as Aussie Josh Fontana went second ball to Oliver Essex and while none of the rest of the visiting batting line-up really got going bar cameos from Dan Stephens (15) and stand-in skipper Liam Weeks (26), Kellow smashed nine fours and six sixes in his 66-ball knock.
For the hosts, Oliver Essex took 3-46, although it was Cornwall Over 50s bowler Brian Dunstan (1-17 off 4) that gave little away.
In reply, Sri Lankan overseas Dinuka Dilshan ensured there’d be no shock by ripping the hosts’ top-order out on his way to figures of 4-3 from three overs, Barripper eventually being dismissed for just 45 with Craig Dunstan (13) and Luke Williams (12) the only players to reach double figures.
The other Premier side due to be in action – Helston – were handed a walkover by Penzance Seconds on Monday night.
The match of the week was at Beacon who were beaten by just three runs by fellow County One side Perranporth who defended 102.
The Pilchards batted first at Tolcarne Road but found the going tough against last year’s league runners-up as only Harry Stephenson (36) really got started.
An unbroken stand of 12 between tailenders Louis Rudin (11no) and Jake Brothers (6no) proved crucial.
For the hosts, all six bowlers took a wicket, three of which fell to Gareth Mankee (3-29).
Perranporth needed early wickets to stand any chance and struck in the first over as the dangerous Ben James went for six.
From there on, Beacon failed to apply any real pressure – Sam James’ 27 off 25 the exception – as they ground their way to 99-9.
Travis Woolston (2-11 off 4) and Brothers (2-13) were the pick, while Stephenson bowled a crucial penultimate over for just five with 13 required.
Truro are looking for an immediate return to the top-flight and saw Charlie Kent lead them to victory over fellow County One side Stithians at Boscawen Park.
The right-hander batted from start to finish for an unbeaten 124 off 67 balls (11 fours, seven sixes) and received fine support from Pakistani overseas Raja Hamza Waheed and newcomer Jonathan Ramnarace who made 28 and 41 respectively in their 199-2.
Stithians never seriously threatened to chase the target, ending on 135-5 despite an unbeaten 64 from Cornwall Over 50s opener Simon Danby.
Rob Harrison (0-14) and Sam Cardigan (0-13) gave little away.
Truro’s league rivals Falmouth welcomed Camborne Seconds in Group D and emerged winners by 24 runs.
Fal got off to a steady start through Harry Philpott (25 off 28) and Haydn Ayres (15 off 12), but although Adrian Noott made a run-a-ball 29 they were held to 119-9.
Eight bowlers were utilised by the visitors.
Cornwall Over 50s all-rounder Martin Jenkin took 1-8 early on, before the last two to be introduce, Sam Eva (2-9 off 3) and Lewis Verran (3-15 off 2), weighed in towards the end.
Noott (2-17 off 4) and Ayres then gave away nothing early on as Camborne slipped to 15-2 and 38-4 before finishing on 95-9.
Kiwi leg-spinner Dylan Van Beer’s first bowl for the club saw him take 2-20 from his four, although Ayres was the star of the show with 3-8 from his four.
Tonight sees the final game of week one as Mullion host fellow Division Two West side St Just Seconds (6.15pm).
The next round of fixtures are scheduled for next week across three days from Tuesday to Thursday, all with 6.15pm starts.
They are as follows: Tuesday, May 12: Paul v St Ives (Group C), Redruth v Falmouth (Group D), Camborne v St Erme (Group E), Stithians v Mount Hawke (Group F), Perranporth v Constantine (Group G).
Wednesday, May 13: St Just 2 v Penzance (Group A).
