NEWQUAY’S Brad Pauls returned to winning ways on Saturday night with a convincing points victory over Omir Rodriguez at the Clash on the Coast 2 event in Torquay.

The ‘Newquay Bomb’ was fighting for the first time since losing his British Middleweight title to Denzel Bentley at Wembley Arena in December and despite the near seven-month lay-off, proved far too good for his opponent from Panama.

Pauls won all eight rounds and was seconds away from a potential stoppage in the last when the final bell went.

The 32-year-old, who is ranked fifth in the British middleweight rankings, was quick to call out a fight with current champion Kieron Conway, who secured the crown in May having secured a technical knockout victory over Welshman Gerome Warburton in what was also a defence of his Commonwealth title.

Pauls said: “It was good a night at the office and got the win. I got a good eight rounds under my belt, won every round and dropped him in the last. He’s a real tough geezer, so respect to him.

“It was just what I needed, I needed to get the rounds in as I hadn’t boxed in nearly seven months, so it was good to shake off a bit of rust and get things moving again and hopefully this sets me up for something bigger in the future.

“I’d love to get on to the bigger shows, hopefully one in July, but we’ll see what happens.”

Pauls was backed by a large number of supporters at the Riviera International Centre, adding: “I also want to say I couldn’t have done it last night without everyone supporting me, so a massive thank you to you guys.

“Fight number 23, win number 20, and a step closer to where I belong. See you all soon!”
