THE waterside village of Rock on the Camel estuary features today as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.
“When the tide is high enough, the ferry leaves from the harbour area. However, when the tide is lower, you have to walk out of Padstow to a beach to catch the ferry.”
Rock is known for its sand. The village has a lovely sandy beach and can be reached, as already mentioned, from Padstow on the opposite shore via a passenger ferry.
The village is also known for its watersports activities and as a starting point for walks in the area.
A stroll out of the village among the sand dunes to the north will take you past the St Enodoc Golf Club links courses. A fascinating feature on one of the courses is St Enodoc Church which was, for part of its long history, largely buried in sand.
The church, now protected as a grade I listed building, was renovated in Victorian times and today is still used for Christian worship.
The former Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman, who wrote verse about the area, is buried in the churchyard.

Next time, we will be heading north of Rock to visit Daymer Bay and Polzeath, two places with great beaches.
Our lovely tour around the county, taking in well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from brilliant beaches, remote moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to historic towns, pretty villages, mining heritage sites and visitor attractions.
