TODAY we are at Mawgan Porth, north of Newquay, as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.

Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, author of the book, says: “Having previously visited the south and west of the county, we are now following the extensive northern coast of Cornwall.”

The resort of Mawgan Porth, with its large sandy beach and substantial headlands, is just a few miles north of Newquay.

The beach is popular among surfers throughout the year, the Atlantic breakers really packing a punch when conditions are right. Bodyboarders, too, can feel the thrill of racing into shore powered solely by awesome wave energy. Needless to say, the sea must be respected here.

A river runs down the beach and there are caves to explore. The surrounding cliffs offer exhilarating walks, both towards Watergate Bay and Bedruthan Steps.

An inland walk along the pleasant Vale of Mawgan (or Lanherne) brings you to the lovely village of St Mawgan which has a 13th century parish church. Nearby is Cornwall Airport Newquay and RAF St Mawgan.

Next time, we will be at Bedruthan Steps, photographs of which have graced many a publication promoting Cornwall as a holiday destination.

Our extensive tour around the county, taking in well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from sandy beaches, remote moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to historic towns, pretty villages, and visitor attractions.

Following the publication of our previous article about the beaches at Porth and Watergate Bay, we have been contacted by a reader who points out that the car park on the beach at Porth is no longer in operation. Local people are calling for it to be reopened.
