NEWQUAY Zoo could be on the verge of being sold.

Mayor Cllr Drew Creek has had held several meetings with the prospective buyers of the attraction at Trenance Leisure Park.

Wild Planet Trust, which also owns Paignton Zoo, recently stated it is exploring investment, which “may or may not involve the sale of our zoos” due to financial pressures the charity is facing.

Cllr Creek spoke about the issue at Newquay Town Council’s meeting on Wednesday, December 3. He said: “I’ve had several meetings with the new prospective, I think they are more than prospective buyers now of Newquay and Paignton zoos.

“Really trying to make sure we can secure the future of the zoo because that is really a key part of our tourist attraction but making sure the animals are well cared for and that the staff’s jobs are protected. I’m really encouraged by the meetings I’m having with them.”

A spokesperson for the Wild Planet Trust said: “We can confirm we are in discussions with interested parties and we are taking the time to explore the details in order to make the best decision for both zoos and Wild Planet Trust. We are at an extremely pivotal point in the process so cannot comment further at the moment.

“We are hoping to provide an update very soon, once all of the details have been confirmed. Our priority remains on animal welfare and staff security.”
