A NEWQUAY woman has published her first novel after drawing inspiration from her family’s shipbuilding legacy in the town.
Liz Clemens, who is a descendent of the Clemens shipbuilders at the Gannel, has written Montegue Skittle.
The fantasy adventure is mainly set in Newquay and takes readers on a journey through different realms and times, showcasing her unique voice and perspective as a writer. The novel features knockers, which are gnome-like mythical creatures from the folklore of Cornwall and Devon.
Liz said: “My book is kind of sci-fi, folklore, fantasy historical fiction. A mix of genres really. I have been thinking about writing it for about four years.
“I wanted to reimagine the knockers. Many people do not know what knockers are, so I wanted to make sure the legend carries on. The book gives some historical insight into Newquay, particularly the Gannel. It touches upon some unusual themes as well.
“Mental illness, autism, the human mind and resilience.
“I want readers to feel the thrill of adventure, but also to understand that our experiences shape how we see the world.
“Montegue Skittle is not just a story; it’s an invitation to embrace differences and celebrate the unique narratives we all carry.”
The publication of Montegue Skittle marks a significant milestone for Liz, who has always dreamed of sharing her stories with the world.
A spokesperson for the publisher Conrad Press said: “Montegue Skittle is a vibrant tale that intertwines magic, adventure, and the exploration of identity.
“Readers will find themselves immersed in a world where the boundaries of reality are blurred, and the only limit is the imagination.
“Liz's ability to weave intricate narratives reflects her own experiences and challenges, offering a story that is both engaging and deeply personal.
“As someone who lives with psychosis, Liz brings a distinctive lens to her storytelling.
“Her writing embraces the beauty of diverse perspectives, challenging readers to consider the world through a different set of eyes. The novel is filled with elements that are strange and quirky, as Liz describes herself, making it a refreshing addition to the fantasy genre.
“In the enchanting world of mythical creatures, Montegue Skittle stands out as a unique ‘knocker,’ an underground troll with a heart full of courage and a knack for mischief.
“Originally from France, Montegue is sent to the rugged shores of Cornwall, where he forges an unbreakable bond with his best friend, Jenna.
“Knocker society is stringent and controlling and their friendship is put to the ultimate test when Montegue and Jenna face the full force of the underground law and are banished through a portal into the unpredictable realms of Earth time.
“Separated by swirling currents of time and space, Montegue must navigate a world that is both familiar and alien, filled with historical wonders and challenges.
“Join Montegue on this thrilling adventure that transcends time, where every moment counts and every choice echoes through the ages.
“Can he find Jenna and return to their world before it's too late? The clock is ticking!
“The book is now available at local bookstores and online platforms, ready for readers to dive into Liz’s imaginative universe.”
