TRIBUTES are still pouring in following the death of a popular Newquay councillor.

People from across the political spectrum have continued to pay tribute to Kevin Towill who passed away on Tuesday, February 10 aged 46.

The Reform UK Cornwall councillor, who represented Newquay Porth and Tretherras, has been praised for always putting Newquay first and working alongside colleagues from all political parties to do what is best for the town and the county.

Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Councillor Kevin Towill, and my sincere condolences are with his loved ones.

“Cllr Towill served on the Devon & Cornwall Police and Crime Panel for many years, including a period of time as chair, playing a vital role in holding my office to account on behalf of the residents of Devon and Cornwall, for which I am very grateful.

“Cllr Towill will be remembered for his professionalism, fairness and good humour, and he will be much missed by me and my office, as well as all those who knew and worked with him.”

Newquay central Lib Dem Cornwall councillor Joanna Kenny said: “So very sad.

“I’ve known Kevin since he first came onto the Town Council as a very young man. He always made it clear that it was the good of Newquay that was his main concern, always willing to reach out across the political divide. He was a fine mayor.

“He bore these last years of illness with great courage and with great dignity. My heart goes out to his family, who have my deepest sympathy.”

Cllr Sandy Carter added: “It’s with great sadness I hear of loss of Cllr Kevin Towill.

“Kevin always put Newquay first and always gave 100 per cent for the local community. I served as his deputy mayor 2012/13 with Kevin was mayor, the youngest Mayor who has ever served Newquay. Our political views were very different, but Newquay was all that mattered to us.

“To Kevin’s friends and family please accept my sincere condolences. May he rest in peace.”

Former Lib Dem Cabinet member Geoff Brown said: “I was very sorry to learn of the passing of Kevin and our thoughts are with Diana and her family at this sad time.

“Kevin was an excellent local councillor and worked tirelessly for the people he represented. In council, although on opposite sides, he was always courteous and constructive, and brave in his personal battle against illness. Kevin worked well with colleagues across Newquay to do his very best for our town and he will be greatly missed.”
