THE Trelawny Male Choir is having a reunion at St Erme Community Centre on Sunday, October 19, and former choristers and supporters are invited to take part.

The particular focus of this event is on the Kernow Male Choir trip to Australia in 2003, and the Trelawny Male Choir tours of Singapore and New Zealand in 2007, Western Canada in 2011 and Eastern Canada in 2015.

Locations were chosen to reflect the destinations of the Cornish diaspora, when thousands of skilled miners left their homeland following the slump in hard-rock mining in the Duchy, in search of work in some of the farthest reaches of the planet.

For each trip, a large choir was made up of members of Cornish male choirs, rehearsing regularly for the best part of two years to produce a magnificent wall of sound that astounded huge audiences wherever it went.

Venues included the landmark Sydney Opera House, Durham Street Methodist Church in Christchurch (since devastated by earthquakes) and the world-famous Bloodstock Centre in Karaka in New Zealand, the futuristic Esplanade Theatre in Singapore, and in Canada the summit of Sulphur Mountain in Banff, Alberta and a town called Cornwall in Ontario.

In each case, a tour party of more than 200 people, including choristers and supporters, set off to wow those with Cornish affiliations, and others besides, by performing and promoting Cornish music.

The St Erme reunion will take place from 2pm to 4pm, and there will be much reminiscing. Members are encouraged to bring photos, a plate of food to share, hot drinks and raffle prizes to contribute. There will also be singing!
