A TRADE union says it will press a major bus company to explore every possible option to avoid compulsory redundancies following plans to close its entire operation in Cornwall.
The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, RMT, states First Bus’ decision is a “major blow” to its members and the communities that rely on the services.
The bus company said the “difficult” decision has been made in the face of ongoing financial challenges intensified by above inflation costs, a significant fall in passenger numbers, a 21 per cent, fall year on year on top of a 13 per cent fall in 2024/25, and increased competition. A downward trend in tourism and changes in travel patterns post Covid have also contributed.
First Bus, which runs 14 services across a fleet of 85 buses in Cornwall, plans to withdraw from all five depots it currently operates from in Camborne, Falmouth, Penzance, Summercourt and Truro. Two hundred and 75 roles are at risk, and First Bus is working with all colleagues affected, who are being supported to find other roles, wherever possible, within First Bus and its parent company FirstGroup.
A RMT spokesperson said: “The announcement that First South West intends to shut down all of its Cornwall operations early next year is a devastating blow for our members and for communities that rely on these services.
"Only weeks after a major restructure and redundancy consultation, the company is now proposing to withdraw completely, putting 275 jobs at risk across Camborne, Falmouth, Penzance, Summercourt and Truro.
“RMT will be pressing First South West to explore every possible option to avoid compulsory redundancies and will be contacting other operators, local authorities and politicians to make sure bus services continue across Cornwall. These routes are vital for local people and must not be allowed to disappear overnight."
