ONE of the most influential skateboarders of all time champion is set to attend a celebration of surf and skate culture being held in Newquay.
Dogtown and Z-Boys legend Tony Alva will be appearing the inaugural UK Surf & Skate Expo, 2025, which will be held at Newquay Sports Centre from September 12 to 14.
The skateboard pioneer will be hosting 'An Evening With Alva', in the expo hall on Saturday, September 13 from 7pm. He be joined by Ozzie Ausband, author of skateboard history book Back In The Day.
The event will be an up close and personal talk with Tony, who will dip into the mythos of skateboarding, Dogtown's history, and what it takes to build a brand.
Alva said: “I’m looking forward to returning to the UK.
“Hoping people can all come out and have a good time with us. I'm really excited about it.”
Alva first visited the UK when he was 19-years-old. He was one of the first American skateboarders to visit and the first to skate London's Southbank.
Alva is also a surfer and musician. He formed the band G.F.P. In 2007, with members of Bad Religion and Suicidal Tendencies. Alva played in LA-based band, His Eyes Have Fangs in 2013.
UK Surf & Skate Expo organiser Chris Thomson, the editor of Wavelength Magazine, said: “It's amazing Tony Alva is joining us here for the UK Surf & Skate Expo.
“Heritage is so important to surf and skate culture, and to have a legend like Tony in Newquay for the weekend, may help inspire a next generation of surfers, and reignite the fire for us old school crew.”
UK Surf & Skate Expo, which will be the biggest surf industry event in the UK in 2025, will offer a variety of activities and attractions for attendees.
The Expo Village will be a 7,000 square meter area featuring a large marquee, a 40-foot outdoor film screen and a purpose-built skate park. The Expo Hall will be an indoor venue adjacent to the Expo Village, accommodating up to 1,150 people, which will host speakers, panel discussions and fireside chats.
The UK Surf & Skate Expo will feature speakers from across the surf and skate world, including, Stefani Nurding, Andrew Cotton, Hugo Tagholm and Andrew Seidel, the founder of Shredenhams.
Ten thousand visitors are expected to attend the three day event.
Events will include Built To Last – an informal chat with the UK’s leading surfboard shapers, Green Waves – a focus on surfing, skateboarding and sustainability and New Wave, which will be a chat with the next generation of UK pro surfers.
Nick Hounsfield, the founder of The Wave, will be hosting a panel discussion on business, purpose and passion.
Big wave surfer Andrew “Cotty” Cotton will also be a keynote speaker at the event. His talk is titled Surfing 100 foot waves - how to build up surf confidence.
The Wavelength UK Surfer Awards, which will honour the outstanding achievements in the UK's surfing community, will be held on September 12.
The event is being run by the DYSUJO group, a home for culture-defining brands including Wavelength Magazine, Longboarder Magazine, Marwick Marketing Agency, 10 Over Surf Shop.
