RNLI Penlee was tasked by Falmouth Coastguard to provide medical aid to an injured crewman aboard a yacht four miles south of Tater Dhu lighthouse.

After receiving the call just before 12pm on Wednesday, August 20, relief coxswain Neville Pittman with a crew of RNLI volunteers made best pace in fine conditions to rendezvous with the yacht.

Neville’s thanks go to the Saint Piran, the enforcement vessel operated by Cornwall IFCA, which was on scene and her dinghy was used to transfer the injured crewman to the lifeboat.

The yachtsman was brought into Newlyn for treatment. Jason Ward, Stuart Farrell and Aaron Clayton were RNLI volunteers who boarded the yacht to assist during the incident.

The yacht was safely moored in Newlyn after making her own way, and Penlee’s ‘Ivan Ellen’ was prepared for the next call.

Previously, just before 9pm on Tuesday, August 19, Falmouth Coastguard tasked Penlee’s inshore lifeboat to a suspected kayaker clinging to a buoy near Rinsey Head.

The lifeboat found the person at the position given but he was quite happy fishing in his kayak, he had the necessary equipment and a light, the lifeboat was not required so made the return to Newlyn.
