RESIDENTS fear parts of a Newquay community could become isolated following a main road closing for four months whilst gas upgrade works take place.
Treloggan Bus Association say many people will become cut off due to disruption to the bus service whilst a rolling road closure is in place on Treloggan Road during the project, from its junction with Mellanvrane Lane down to its junction with Polwhele Road from Monday, November 10 until Thursday, February 27, 2026.
The campaign group argues the “much-reduced” service will leave some residents who rely on the bus service too far to walk to get to a bus stop that will be in operation during the gas upgrade works.
Thomas Beeson from Treloggan Bus Association said: “We are pleased to see Go Cornwall has decided to continue the 59 service which calls at most stops in Treloggan, during the disruption.
“However, this can be somewhat unreliable and infrequent, especially when there are currently no plans to run the 88, 86, 93, 93E services. We are also pleased that there will be some access to the 87 service from Morrisons car park, still a long walk for residents near Kew Close. It is disappointing that this is a much-reduced service compared to what has been offered previously during disruption caused by essential works.
“The impact on residents is considerable, especially regular bus users, many will not be able to walk the extra distance to the bus stop at Penina or manage the steep hill to Newquay Zoo. Some in the community will feel isolated and cut off from essential amenities.”
Treloggan Bus Association, which was formally called Better Service Treloggan, staged its first public meeting at the Tavern Inn on Tuesday, November 4.
Members agreed to organise a petition to call for Treloggan to have a reliable year-round bus service.
Mr Beeson said: “The first meeting of the newly formed Treloggan Bus Association was very productive and is attracting considerable support within the Newquay community and beyond.
“This group aims to bring people together within Treloggan and working to inform residents of bus information and ensure Treloggan has a reliable service all year round.”
Wales and West Utilities’ Natalie Raphael, who is managing the work, said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
