ARTISTS have transformed doorways throughout Newquay to help brighten up the town and a vote is due to get underway to choose people’s favourite.

Newquay BID is launching a public vote following 20 doorway murals being created by local artists over recent weeks, which will start on Wednesday, April 22 at 7am.

Among the artworks include Sunset at the Headland at the Headland Hotel by Saskia Taskis, Bloody Gulls by Emily Donald at Sailors, A Coastal Meadow by Millie Wilkins at The Clover Club, The Island After Dark by Diane Griffiths at the EE shop and Ro An Mor by Amy Cruse at Newquay Football Club.

The voting period will be for two weeks and the artist behind the winning door mural will receive a £1,000 cash prize.

QR code plaques will be installed at each location in the coming weeks, which will link to information about each of the 20 artists and their designs.

Artists were matched with participating businesses, and the final concept of the artwork was agreed collaboratively.

The Door Art designs will connect with the larger murals already created as part of the MUQY Newquay Street Art Walking Tour to encourage visitors to explore more of the town centre while adding “colour, creativity and vibrancy.”

Several murals have been created across the town centre over the past few years by renowned artists including Ben Allen, Kleiner Shames, Elle Koziupa, 45 RPM and Hixxy.

Newquay BID manager Mark Warren said: “People can now view all 20 of the doorway murals created by our amazing local artists over the past few weeks.

“They will have the chance to explore each piece and discover the incredible talent behind them.

“We’re currently working behind the scenes on QR codes, and everything will soon become part of the Newquay Mural Trail.

“We have also set up a website and voting page to give people a chance to vote.

“We’re incredibly excited about what the Door Art scheme means for our town.

“A huge thank you goes to all the local artists who have taken part and helped bring even more creativity, culture, and colour to our community.

“This is just the beginning. There is so much more to come as we continue developing projects that help drive year-round footfall and celebrate everything our town has to offer.

“Any local business interested in getting involved or interested in taking part, please get in touch we’d love to hear from them and help share what you’re doing.

“We’re continuing to work closely with businesses to grow this project even further.

“People should get ready to take a walk around the town, explore the artwork, and choose their favourite piece on the high street and beyond. The public vote will decide the winner of this competition.

“We’re thrilled to see the response so far, with growing local and national press interest.

“It is exciting times ahead.”
