LONGSTANDING plans to relocate the household waste recycling centre (HWRC) in Newquay are underway.
Cornwall Council has been allocated land to build the facility adjacent to the Newquay Strategic Route, opposite Hendra Holiday Park.
The new site, part of the Duchy of Cornwall’s Nansledan development, will feature a modern split-level design, increased capacity, and dedicated queueing lanes to ease traffic flow.
The development will proceed under the Local Development Order, streamlining the planning process and allowing construction to begin in 2026 with completion expected in 2027.
The relocation scheme follows criticism the household waste recycling centre at Trevenson Road is no longer fit for purpose. More than 50 cars were regularly at a standstill outside the centre before the council introduced time slots for residents to visit.
Newquay Porth and Tretherras Cornwall councillor Kevin Towill said: “The new site near Hendra Holiday Park will ease congestion, improve safety, and offer modern facilities for residents.
“The existing HWRC on Trevenson Road has faced growing criticism for years. With queues regularly stretching beyond 50 vehicles, residents have voiced concerns about safety and congestion. The site’s location, nestled within a residential area, has become increasingly problematic, prompting calls for change.
“The new centre is designed not only to improve waste management but also to support Cornwall’s broader environmental goals. By reducing queuing and idling, the site will help lower emissions and improve road safety. A reuse building is also planned, promoting sustainability and circular economy principles.
“As Cornwall Council finalises the land swap and prepares for construction, the relocation of the HWRC stands as a testament to responsive governance and community-focused planning.
“For Newquay residents. It’s more than just a new facility. It’s a tangible result of civic engagement and a promise fulfilled.”
