PEOPLE travelling into Newquay are to receive a vibrant new welcome to the town.

Newquay Town Council is working in partnership with The Duchy of Cornwall to create new ‘Welcome to Newquay’ signage.

The Duchy has a professional designer working on artist’s impressions for the signage to reflect various aspects of Newquay that includes fishing, surfing and the ocean.

They are due to replace the outdated Coast of Dreams signage currently in place along the main entrances into the town at William Hosken Road, Trevemper Road and Rialton Road.

The Duchy showed town councillors some of the initial designs at a recent meeting to see if they were suitable.

Cllr Joanna Kenny said: “There has been a long-term agreement between the Duchy and the town council about working on replacing the current signs and that project is starting in earnest now.

“We had an interesting meeting to look at the designs so far. The Duchy has a professional designer involved and he’s proposing some fabulous signs to represent the town.

“The signs won’t be photographs but an artist’s impression of aspects of the town.

“There’s a fabulous one of a fishing boat which would be ideal for Trevemper, although technically with the diversion of the A3059 that will only be an entrance for traffic from the south.

“We liked a beautiful surfing one which indicates the town and sunshine of course for the Rialton Road coming up to Nansledan.

“The ocean will feature of course and for realism, we did suggest less delicate looking sailing boats out at sea in the background and more seagulls.

“One problem, the entrances to the town are changing or have already changed so current welcome signs not necessarily in the right place.

“Trevemper, for example, although what’s proposed will really complement the anchor site. That roundabout will no longer be getting traffic from the A30.

“Our current Trevemper sign celebrates the Newquay in Bloom gold award of 2017 and they’ve won a lot more since then.

“The town council will be discussing that with the various organisations. Everything will depend on what highways consider safe.

“I never knew there was so much to sign development and installation. We’re only at first suggestion for sites so there is nothing firm.

“There is an awful lot of work needed for something that will present our town for years and nothing will be happening until Spring 2025 but its looking good.”

A spokesperson for the Duchy of Cornwall said: "We had a very positive meeting with the town council about working together with an artist to provide some new signage for the town.

“It's still early days but we look forward to further discussions."
