WORK is due to start on building a new £150,000 play park in central Newquay, which is due to be completed ahead of the summer holidays.

Newquay Town Council has given the green light for work to get underway on constructing the facility in Mount Wise Gardens within the next six weeks.

The play park will include climbing frames, slides, a bug magnifier, an inclusive totem, interactive play panels, a pirate’s lookout, a hammock and a somersault bar.

Outdoor playground manufacturer Wicksteed has been chosen as the contractor for the project.

The play park is being funded through a £50,000 donation from the Boardmasters Foundation and £100,000 of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), which is a charge local authorities can place on new developments to fund infrastructure.

The town council has given the go head for work to start following a consultation process, which has included getting feedback from students at Newquay Junior Academy.

The play park project follows Cornwall Council approving a partial devolution of land at Mount Wise Gardens as part of ongoing efforts to enhance community spaces and deliver “inclusive, family-friendly amenities in the heart of Newquay.”

Mayor Cllr Drew Creek said: “I am so excited to finally be able to see the years of engagement and planning with the children of Newquay to have this wonderful new play park coming to fruition.

“Having met with the Newquay Junior councillors last week to get the sign off was amazing and I thank them and their headteacher Tania Findlay MBE and Mr Squire for facilitating that meeting.

“The children were passionate and enthusiastic.

“The town council will now work with our chosen contractor on site to get this delivered we hope in time for summer holidays. We will make sure to arrange a celebratory open day once the park is finished to engage the community.”
