FINAL preparations are underway to stage Remembrance events in Newquay.
A special Remembrance concert is being staged at St Michael’s Church on Friday, November 6 at 7pm.
Newquay Band, Newquay Male Voice Choir, Oll an Gwella and the RAF St Mawgan Military Wives Choir will be performing in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
There will also be solo performances from Gareth Horner, Billy Mander and Nigel Warner on the bagpipes.
A traditional Remembrance ceremony will be held second during the second part of the evening, which will include the vow, the Kohima Epitaph, a two-minute silence as well as the Last Post and Reveille played by Steve Fryett. Nigel Warmington will pipe in the RBL standard. The evening will conclude with the congregational singing of Land of Hope and Glory and the National Anthem, led by Newquay Band.
The Royal British Legion parade will be held on Sunday, November 8, which will bring together veterans, Armed Forces personnel, emergency services representatives, dignitaries and community groups to remember and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Participants will assemble at Fore Street car park at 9.45am before departing at 10am. The parade will make its way through the town centre to St Michael's Church, where they are expected to arrive at approximately 10.45am ahead of the Remembrance Service.
Various groups annually take part in the Remembrance parade including Newquay Air Cadets, Newquay Army Cadets, councillors, Newquay Coastguard, Newquay Fire Station, Newquay Ambulance Station, Newquay Police, Newquay RNLI, Newquay Women’s Institute, Lions groups, Newquay Women’s Institute, Newquay in Bloom, Trenance Cottages Newquay Hospital League of Friends, scouts and guides.
A rolling road closure will be in operation between 9.45am and 10.45am to ensure the safety of participants, spectators and other road users. Roads will be closed only as the parade passes through and reopened as soon as it is safe to do so. Most roads are expected to be affected for no longer than 15 minutes, helping to keep disruption to a minimum. Traffic management and road closures will be coordinated by Newquay Town Council.
Roads affected by the rolling road closure include Central Street at Manor Road junction, East Street, Trebarwith Crescent, Manor Road, Manor Road Car Park, Marcus Hill, Bank Street, The Crescent, Gover Lane, Chapel Hill, Beachfield Avenue, King Street, Beach Road, Cheltenham Place and Fore Street from Alma Place junction.
Wreaths will be re-laid at the Newquay War Memorial following the church service.
Parade marshal Daz Keeler said: “The Newquay RBL Branch hope for good weather throughout & look forward to welcoming you to all the Remembrance events. *Project 83 in Wesley’s Yard will be open for pre-parade refreshments from 8am and then for post-parade refreshments after the church service.”
