THERE are moments that perfectly capture the spirit of Newquay, and one such event is taking place this week at Newquay Junior School. In partnership with the fantastic volunteers of Newquay Clean, we’re turning a problem into a powerful lesson.
The children will help us deconstruct the flimsy bodyboards that too often litter our beaches. By inviting local media and businesses, we aim to shine a light on a dual issue: the environmental damage caused by these products and the very real safety risk they pose in our powerful surf.
This is proactive, community-driven change at its best – safeguarding our natural environment for everyone. In other positive news, I’m delighted that our Newquay Tourist Information team is moving to become an integral part of the library space. This innovative approach creates a single, central point of contact for all Town Council queries. It ensures that, unlike the recent demise of Visit Cornwall, ‘Visit Newquay’ will remain a vibrant, accessible service for tourists and locals for years to come. It also allows for better, more collaborative work across our council team, breaking down silos for a more efficient service.
Finally, I would like to extend my best wishes to Cllr Christine Parsonage, who has decided to step down from representing St Columb Minor & Colan for health reasons. We thank her for her service. This means a by-election will be held soon. I hope we can all engage to find a candidate who will listen, be present, and champion the interests of our community with energy and commitment. Whether it’s on our beaches, in our services, or in our council chambers, our focus remains on making Newquay a better place for all.

Another changeable week ahead with strong south westerly winds, and heavy rain at times. Today will probably be the best day of the week.
Several boats have gone to Padstow for the bad weather, and next Monday the boats are being craned out onto the quay. Good to see lots of lugworm casts down by the boats, like it used to be.
This Saturday Stargazer is performing at Newquay Rowing Club at 9 pm and on Sunday Paula is singing from 2pm for Remembrance Sunday. All welcome.
Thought for the week: ”When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.”
