Members of Newquay lifeguard team have been recognised for their achievements throughout the season. 

Harry Reed was named lifeguard of the year. A senior at Crantock Beach he has been commended after leading the team through a “very challenging” season due to the changing topography and increased risk. 

Gareth Jones and Ian Nancarrow received the Gareth Nicholas Memorial Award for outstanding contribution after working tirelessly throughout the season to keep the operational equipment ready for service. 

Tamsin Hart received the ‘dedication to role’ award for the great work she has done for the administrative team. 

Elise Irish received rookie lifeguard of the year for her first season, after her enthusiasm and willingness to learn was “exceptional”. 

Harry Pleasants received the award for most improved lifeguard after progressing “very quickly” in the time he has been on the team. 

Lewis Timson, the lead lifeguard manger in Newquay, said: “Congratulations to the members of our team who have been recognised for their achievements in 2023. 

“Well done to our whole team along with these individuals, preparations for 2024 have already begun. 

“Please stay safe this winter. 

“Always make sure you are always contactable at the coast by carrying a fully charged mobile phone and if you get into trouble or see someone else in trouble, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
