The final stage of a new main road in Newquay has been given the green light.

Cornwall Council has approved the section of the Newquay Strategic Route, which will be delivered in partnership with Network Rail by late 2024 at a cost of £24m.

The stretch will cover from the south of the bastion wall to and including the roundabout on the A392, and the section bridging the Newquay to Par railway line, with Network Rail leading on the bridge, and Cormac on the rest.

The final phase, which is 20 years in the making, is a key component to unlocking various improvements in the Newquay area.

The route will allow the relocation of the Household Waste Centre in Trevenson Road to its new location across the road from Hendra Tourist Park.

This in turn will release the current waste centre to be redeveloped for extra care provision.

The Newquay Strategic Route, when completed will also open up the start of the Chapel Gover scheme for 600 houses

The expectation is that the road will ease the traffic flow going through Quintrell Downs.

A public consultation is due to take place after the Newquay Strategic Route is opened about closing both the Trencreek and Chapel rail crossing to car traffic.

The money to fund the section of the Newquay Strategic Route will come from various Section 106 highways contributions from developments such as the Goldings.

Section 106 payments are those made by developers as part of the planning application process.

Cllr John Fitter said: “After over 20 years of talking about it the final stage of the Newquay Strategic Road has been signed off for completion.

“It has been a long wait but perhaps it is the beginning of the end, and at long last we will have this project completed.

“This will entail a bridge over the railway line and the section down to where the NSR where there will be a junction which leads off to the section which has almost been completed, that is the section that leads up in the direction of Tretherras College.

“This section has been built out by the Duchy of Cornwall, from the junction the route will then be completed in the direction of the roundabout at Nansledan.”

Newquay MP Steve Double has been working with Cornwall Council, Network Rail and the Duchy of Cornwall to bring these plans forward.

He said: “With the tremendous growth of Newquay in recent years, it is more important than ever that the Newquay Strategic Route is delivered.

“This is a critical piece of strategic transport infrastructure that will boost the whole town and improve connectivity for both Newquay and the surrounding area.”
