Prime Cattle

Numbers tighter but trade looking as strong as ever, with a good showing of quality for the bullocks forward.

Top call of 400p/kg (£2,628) for a shapely young Charolais steer from Maxco Farms of St Allen, Truro, followed by a heavyweight 777kg Limousin steer from Messrs R C & M Pellow of Summercourt, Newquay at 390p/kg and the top pounds-per-head of £3,030.

A 653kg Angus steer from Maxco Farms looked well sold at 383p/kg (£2,501), another Charolais steer from the same stable next at 378p/kg (£2,449) and a 677kg Limousin steer rounded off their day at 370p/kg (£2,505).

Heifers to 375p/kg (£2,411) for a 643kg Hereford from Mr J A Skewes of Penwartha, Truro, a good young 594kg Hereford heifer from Messrs J D Phillips & Son of St Buryan, Penzance sold for 357p/kg (£2,121) and the best 628kg Hereford heifer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay went under the hammer at 350p/kg (£2,198).

More numbers needed for next week please with the everpresent buyer demand not faltering.

Cull Cows

A good entry to report this week and cracking trade to match, with beef types topping at 288p/kg for a 659g South Devon on behalf of Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb, followed by a 265p/kg Limousin from Messrs W T Kea & Son of St Breock, Wadebridge.

A framey Limousin cross steer, being 839kg from Mr P C W Moyle of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth achieved 260p/kg, whilst dairy types topped at 277p/kg for a 692kg Friesian heifer from Messrs R G Keast & Son of Allet, Truro. Cull bulls topping at 238p/kg on behalf of Mr V M Moyle of Penryn.

Store Cattle

A big entry to report this week and firm trade to match.

2-year-old steers from Mr C G Andrew of St Austell topped the day at £2290 with further Blues from the same Vendor achieving £2060 and £1850.

Messrs J D Philliips & Son of St Buryan, Penzance sold 5 19-month-old Hereford Steers to £2000 a piece, whilst 22-month-old Blues from Messrs W W James & Sons of Sancreed, Penzance realised £1860.

Smart 2-year-old cattle also in from Mr W H Pengelly of Praze-an-Beeble with Blues selling to £1700, a Welsh Black to £1695 and an Angus to £1675, whilst a 22-month-old Limousin from Messrs B H, G J & F B W Ely of St Keverne, Helston achieved £1675 also.

Best of the younger steers selling to £1430 for a grand bunch of 5 1-year-old Simmentals on behalf of Mr B Cowell of Helston, whilst a pair of 15-month-old Herefords from Mr W H A Hicks of Helston Water, Truro parted away at £1180.

Messrs S & L Awdry of Trendeal, Truro sold 13-month-old Anguses to £1150, Messrs C J & J E Colwell of Truro sold Blues to £940 and Mr C Ferkin of St Mewan, St Austell sold 1-year-old Herefords to £1130 and £1050.

Heifers topped at £2120 for a fine pair of 21- month-old Herefords on behalf of Messrs J D Philips & Son, whilst Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb sold South Devons to £1995 and Limousins to £1790.

A 19-month-old Limousin from Mr I C Prowse of St Allen, Truro achieved £1800, with Blues from the same vendor achieving £1445, whilst Mr J L Sampson of St Buryan, Penzance sold 7 1½-year-old South Devon heifers to £1600.

Younger heifers topped at £1060 on behalf of Mr J T Rowe Camborne, whilst a pair of 13-month-old Herefords from Mr C Ferkin realised £950.

Rearing Calves

Another good entry of calves selling on a similar trade as in recent weeks.

Best of the bull calves to £640 three times for British Blue x bulls all sold by Messrs R N & D Jenkin from Manaccan, who also sold their Aberdeen Angus x bull for £470, and going on to top the heifer section with their best pair of British Blue x heifers making £535 each and another pair selling for £525 each.

Young British Blue x bulls sold to £585 on behalf of Messrs J H & S M Dark from Mullion, closely followed by another British Blue x bull making £520 for Messrs C J & J E Colwell from Creed who also sold a Friesian bull for £265 and their British Blue x heifers to £355.

Messrs J R, P M & D W Treleaven from Trenarren sold their best British Blue x bull for £480 with their British Blue x heifers making £355 and £310.

A good run of young calves from Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian sold their best British Blue x bull for £470 and further British Blue x bulls at £450, £445, and £395 and going on to sell British Blue x heifers to £370.

A very smart pair of Friesian bulls sold very well at £335 and £295 for Mr R G Olver from St Stephen, and young British Blue x heifers to £355 for Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah who also sold another British Blue x heifer for £350 and their Limousin x heifer at £305.

A mixed entry of stronger weaned calves many out of crossbred cows saw a good trade with a pair of Devon x steers making £530 each for Messrs A F & C L Watts from St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly and Messrs R Symons & Son from Treverva sold a bunch of three Hereford x steers at £515, a pen of four Hereford x heifers at £410, and a pair of 12 week old Friesian steers sold well to make £440 each for Messrs R G Olver & Son.

Prime Lambs

An overall lift in the finished trade.

The heavyweights were a storming trade, with seven pens over £160 and a top price of £180 for a pair of 53kg butchers lambs from Mr K Rogerson of St Agnes, sold to JV Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Setting the premium at 350p/kg were a smart pen of Texel x lambs from Messrs TB & MB Obsorne of St Eval, also Sold to JV Richards Ltd.

Cull Ewes

Similar numbers to last week were met with a stand-on trade on a like-for-like basis, however a very high proportion of smaller bodied and plainer ewes will have affected the overall averages.

Top call of £165 for a pair of Zwartbles and Texel 2-tooths from Mr Tomkins of Wendron, Helston. Suffolk x to £143 for Mr T D Retallick of St Columb. Zwartbles and Zwartbles x to £138 for Mr K Rogerson of St Agnes; and £136 for Messrs J & A Wherry of St Dennis.

Lleyn to £137 for Mr S McLernon of Portscatho. Medium bodied Texel x to £129 for Mr I Littlefield of St Eval and £127 for Messrs TB & MB Osborne of St Eval. A medium Texel ram from Messrs JM & SJ Folland of Truro sold for £133.50.

Store Lambs

Numbers tight and a varied entry consisting of everything from close to finish types right down to very long-term lambs and everything in between.

Top price on the day was £138 on behalf of Mr P R Sluggett of Grampound Road, followed by Messrs J & A & Wherry of St Dennis, St Austell at £132. £132 also achieved by Messrs W & R Taffinder of Truro, with Messrs D W & Y Swinfen of Falmouth a touch behind at £129.
