Prime Cattle

A mixed entry of Prime Cattle forward, with some good quality animals in amongst and a solid trade.

Top pence-per-kilo for a 638kg Angus heifer in from Messrs A A & D P Eddy of Hayle at 402p/kg (£2,565), with the top price steer at 399p/kg (£2,250) for a good Limousin from Messrs F T & F M Johns of Cury, Helston.

The best young non-FABBL Angus heifer from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne parted away at 388p/kg (£2,367) and another Limo steer from Messrs Johns selling for 376p/kg (£2,023).

Top pounds per head awarded to a big 864kg OTM Hereford steer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay at 309p/kg and £2,670.

Cull Cows

A sizeable entry of 70 cull cows and bulls forward to report, with the trade holding at similar levels to last week.

Top pence per kilo to a dairy type this week being an Ayrshire cow from Mr N L J Trevethan of Rosehill, Truro at 287p/kg.

The best Hereford cow forward from Messrs E J Benney & Partners of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth traded at 262p/kg, followed by a Shorthorn cow from Mr R J Trezise of Morvah, Penzance at 260p/kg which was tied with a Blue cow from Messrs Benney at the same money.

A Devon cow from Mr J P Williams of Tregullow, Redruth realised 257p/kg, with two Shorthorns and a Limousin cow from Mr Trezise next at 256p/kg and 255p/kg twice.

With the top dairy type already mentioned, a run of good Friesian cows from Messrs D C & W A Thomas of Tresillian, Truro topped at 244p/kg and 239p/kg, with a Friesian cow from Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston at 235p/kg thereafter.

An Angus bull from Mr C R Broom of Trenance, Newquay, tipping the scales at 931kg, realised 239p/kg and a resultant £2,225.

Store Cattle

A lighter entry as is typical for Primestock week although a strong trade with steers topping at £2285 for a superb trio of 28-month-old Limousins on behalf of Mr R I Nicholls of St Clement, Truro, who went on to sell a trio of Angus to £2195.

20-month-old Limousins from Mr W A Treloar of Perranporth, Truro sold to £1880 and £1630, whilst a smart run of cattle in from Neil Rowe Farming Ltd of The Lizard saw lots to £1860, £1830, £1785 and £1670.

Younger steers topping at £1080 for a single 7-month-old Limousin on behalf of Mr D J Beckerleg of St Austell, followed by an 8-month-old Limousin from Mr N Warren of Withiel, Bodmin at £970.

Heifers topped at £1700 on behalf of Mr W A Treloar, followed by a trio of Limousins from Neil Rowe Farming Ltd at £1425.

Thereafter, heifers selling to £1380 and £1250 on behalf of Mr M P Carlyon of St Day, Redruth, followed by Mr D J Beckerleg and Neil Rowe Farming again with cattle realising £1220.

Rearing Calves

A tidy entry of calves and older stirks through the ring this week, with a large crowd of buyers present.

Bull calves to £480 for a month-old Limousin from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston, followed by a same-aged Simmental bull from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston at £465.

A slightly older Blue bull from Messrs Blee followed at £420 and a run of strong month-old Angus bulls from Messrs Searle & Son of Rosudgeon, Penzance trading at £410, £405 and £395 thrice.

Messrs Bray back with their month-old Limousin bull at £390 which was tied with a young Angus bull from Messrs M & J Rowe ofAshton, Helston at the same money.

The best good Friesian bull of the day from Messrs Searle parted away at £185.

Heifers also seeing good demand with a month-old Blue from Mr N Monies of Zennor, St Ives trading at £415, with an older Limousin from Messrs Blee at £400 and another Blue from Mr Monies at £365.

The best Angus heifer of the day in from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay made £330, followed by a two month old Angus heifer from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro at £315.

A run of 10 quality stirks from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston saw prices at £725 for a trio of Angus steers, £720 for a single Angus heifer and £605 for both a pair of Blue steers and a pair of Blue heifers.

Prime Lambs

Improved averages on the week, with the heavy weights continuing to command top prices.

A smart pen of blocky 43.3kg lambs from Mr W D Pascoe of St Newlyn East set the premium at 352p/kg, sold to Jaspers of South Petherwin.

An enormous pair of 72.5kg lambs from Mr M A Horrocks of Cubert saw prices peak at £174, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Cull Ewes

Another flying trade for cull ewes this week with an overall average of £148.

Topping at £194 were a superb pair of Charollais x ewes from Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan, Newquay. Further Charollais x and other crossbred ewes for the same vendors to £177, £165 and £163.

Texels to £178 for Messrs S J & S M Ward of Grampound Road, Truro; £172 and £169 for Mr W D Pascoe of St Newlyn East, Newquay; £168 for Mr R Gluyas of Stithians, Truro.

Further Charollais x to £177 again for Messrs Ward. Zwartbles to £170 for Mr T Watters of Carleen, Helston. Dorsets to £155 for Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par.

Rams to £168 for a Texel from Mr R Gluyas of Stithians, Truro. Sheep (2T) to £128 for 3 wethers from Mr & Mrs P Tullett of Tregony, Truro.

Store Sheep

Numbers lighter this week but a superb trade across the board, topping at £147 for a very forward trio in from Mr D Searle of Wendron, Helston.

Mr Searle sold further stores to £137.50, whilst Mr J McFadden of St Just, Penzance sold his choice pair to £140, with pens thereafter to £127 and £117.50.

Smart lambs in from Messrs S J & S M Ward of Grampound Road, Truro realised £132 twice, whilst Mr R Gluyas of Truro sold a super pair to £120. Overall store lamb average of £110.
