Prime Cattle
The very best prime bullocks are still commanding a strong trade, although this week’s entry was comprised mainly of out-of-spec lightweight animals.
Nevertheless, a cracking 771kg Limousin heifer from Mr Henry Eddy of Tehidy, Camborne flew away to 417p/kg and top pounds per head of £3,215, followed by his OTM 764kg Limousin steer at 400p/kg and £3,056.
Mr Eddy’s 601kg Limousin heifer up next which parted away at 390p/kg, followed by an OTM Limousin steer at 379p/kg (£2,380) from Messrs E A & A R Thomas of Sevenmilestone, Truro and a Limousin steer from Messrs J & J Sawle & Son of St Agnes, Truro was one bid behind at 378p/kg.
An Angus steer from Messrs L T Harvey & Sons of Newbridge, Penzance topped the natives at 376p/kg (£2,403) and a 650kg Blue steer from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro went under the hammer at 362p/kg, tied with a young Angus heifer from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne at the same money.
Cull Cows
Still healthy numbers of cull animals being presented, with trade holding firm.
Top of the day at 270p/kg for a middle-aged Friesian cow from Messrs M & J Rowe of Ashton, Helston, followed by a Limousin cow from Mr J Small of Newquay at 255p/kg.
A Gasconne cow from Messrs G E R & C E R James of Rosudgeon, Penzance realised 245p/kg, a Simmental cow from Mr A C Harris of Carn Brea, Redruth sold away at 242p/kg and a Devon cow from Mr R E Richards of St Keverne, Helston traded at 240p/kg.
The top dairy type already mentioned, followed by a Friesian from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro at 233p/kg, a Friesian cow from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro made 228p/kg and a Friesian cow from Messrs L T Harvey & Sons of Newbridge, Penzance sold away at 225p/kg.
Store Cattle
A slightly lighter entry to report, though still decent numbers for the time of year and a fine trade from start to finish. Steers topping at £2285 for a super single South Devon on behalf of Mr T G Hawke of Colan, Newquay who sold further steers to £2225, £2090 and £2000.
Mr A L Pascoe of Fraddam, Hayle sold a 20-month-old South Devon to £2200, whilst a 27-month-old British Blue from Messrs M & J Rowe of Ashton, Helston realised £1925.
A big bunch of seven 1½ -year-old Angus steers from S H Ellis Partnership of St Just, Penzance achieved £1920, followed by a 22-month-old Hereford from Messrs R G Olver & Son of St Stephen, St Austell at £1700.
Younger steers looking well sold to £1360 for a 9-month-old trio of Blues on behalf of Mr B R Oliver of Garker, St Austell, with a further trio from the same vendor to £1250, whilst Mr J Kendall of Common Moor, Liskeard sold cracking 7-month-old Charolais to £1300, £1230 and £1195 with Herefords then to £1190.
A large consignment of 28 1-year-old steers from Mr C Hatch of East Taphouse, Liskeard sold to £1080 for Charolais, £1070 for Limousins and £1035 for Blues.
Heifers topping at £2120 for a fine pair of 20-month-old Limousins from Mr G V Ninnis of St Just, Penzance who sold Simmentals of the same age to £1910 followed by Messrs M & J Rowe at £1835 for his 21-month-old Limousin.
An over age Angus from S H Ellis Partnership achieved £1830, followed by 19-month-old Blues and 15-month-old Angus from Mr A L Pascoe at £1470 and £1390 respectively.
Young heifers thereafter to £1105 on behalf of Mr J Kendall, with Mr C Hatch selling strong heifers to £1040. In-calf cows topping at £2210 for a Charolais outfit on behalf of Messrs R J & A M Pedrick of Buckfast.
Rearing Calves
A real bite to the calf trade, with prices strengthening on last week and ringside demand not faltering.
Top price very well achieved by a smart young month-old Hereford bull calf from Mr V M Moyle of Halvasso, Penryn at £545, with a strong month-old Blue bull from Messrs M, R & A Carbis of Ruan High Lanes, Truro at £530 and an older Limousin bull from Mr W H F Harvey of Lanivet, Bodmin at £515.
A pair of month-old Limo bulls from Messrs M & J Rowe of Ashton, Helston achieved £505 and £485, with a month-old Limousin bull from Sixty Acres Ltd of Zelah, Truro at £470.
Messrs Searle & Son from Rosudgeon, Penzance topped their run of good calves at £445 for a month-old Angus bull and others at £430, £425, £390 and £375 from the same stable.
Mr N Monies of Zennor, St Ives saw his best month-old Blue bull away at £370, which was tied with a same age and breed bull calf from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay at the same money.
Heifers to £505 for a strong older Limousin from Mr Harvey and a shapey Blue heifer at 8 weeks old from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro to £495 with their others at £440, £435 and £380.
A Charolais heifer from Messrs B & J Bailey of Veryan, Truro sold for £475 and the best Devon heifer on the day to £385 from Mr D R Hair of London Apprentice, St Austell.
Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston were back again this week with a quality run of Angus, Blue and Montbeliarde stirks all from the Farm Assured holding.
7 to 8 month old Angus steers to £715 for a bunch of four and a single Blue heifer topped at £620.
Prime Lambs
An overall steady trade but prices have eased nationally.
Leading the averages at 329p/kg for two vendors, firstly for a pair of 39kg Dorset Crosses from Mr B Lugg of Cury Cross Lanes, Helston and also for a pen of 38kg Texel Crosses from Miss J Austin of Trewellard, Penzance both pens bought by R J Trevarthen Ltd.
Topping at £169 for a cracking pair of 62.5kg lambs from Mr B Lugg, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Cull Ewes
A short entry forward this week, with many more required to satisfy buyer demand as trade remains at record levels for the time of year.
Topping the section was a solid 6T Texel ram from Messrs C H P Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge selling to £240.
Few continentals forward, and cull ewes selling to £163 for the best of a short run of Poll Dorsets and Dorset X from Messrs I C & W P Lobb of St Ewe, St Austell with others to £157.50 and £136.
Suffolk X to £156 for Messrs J & S Rowe of Bodmin. Suffolk X Mules to £154 for Newlyn Farm Partnership of St Newlyn East, Newquay.
Further Dorsets to £150.50 again for Messrs Rowe. North of England Mules to £129 again for Newlyn Farm Partnership and £123.50 for Mr N H Swallow of Falmouth.
Store Sheep
A big entry yet again exceeding 200, though trade would be a touch easier across the board in line with the finished prices.
Fewer close to finish continental types, but a top price of £125.50 for Mr & Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay.
Mr and Mrs Hawkey sold a further pen to £120, whilst a strong single from Mr J T Rowe of Lower Penponds, Camborne achieved £124, followed by Mr S Jones of Breage, Helston and Miss J Austin of Pendeen at £121.50 and £120.50 respectively.
The choice pen of a consignment of 80 Easycares from Tregerles Farm Estates of Mitchell, Newquay, sold to £108, with the whole run averaging £103.50. Store lamb section average of £102.70.
