Prime Cattle

A stunning entry of no less than 50 Prime Cattle forward this week for our annual Commercial Primestock Prize Sale.

Top of the day to 429p/kg (£2,874) for a beautiful 670kg Limousin steer from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston, followed by a trio of quality Limousin steers from the same farm all tied at 420p/kg (£3,112, £2,806 & £3,016).

Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay saw her smart 719kg Limousin steer trade at 419p/kg (£3,013), a pair of young Charolais steers from Maxco Farms of St Allen, Truro parted away at 415p/kg (£2,851) and 414p/kg (£2,915) and another pair of Limo steers from Messrs Bryant at 410p/kg (£3,153) and 408p/kg (£2,991).

A young Limousin steer from Maxco Farms also realised 408p/kg (£2,778), another Limousin steer from Mrs Julian at 400p/kg thereafter and the best Charolais steer forward from J B Old Farms of Treyanon Bay, Padstow at 399p/kg (£2,933).

An equally impressive entry of heifers on show topped at 420p/kg for a shapey Limousin from Messrs Bryant, a weighty 747kg Limousin heifer from Mr G J Richards of Porkellis, Helston traded at 418p/kg (£3,122) and another from Messrs Bryant at 416p/kg.

An outstanding run of cattle, with many other quality animals too numerous to mention, but a pleasure to see and a credit to their vendors.

Cull Cows

The seasonal numbers of cull animals are holding firm, with the 65 passing through the ring all witnessing a slightly easier trade in-line with the deadweight prices.

Top pence per kilo this week was actually awarded to a good Simmental cull bull from Mr B Cowell of Wendron, Helston at 298p/kg, followed by a smart 712kg South Devon cull cow from Mr C Weldhen of St Columb at 284p/kg and a Devon cow from Mr K M Wilkin of Mount Hawke, Truro traded at 259p/kg.

Messrs H Dunstan & Sons of Mabe, Penryn marketed their Charolais cow at 251p/kg, a Shorthorn cow from Messrs D G Lambrick & Son of St Keverne, Helston parted away at 249p/kg, which was tied with a Hereford cow from Mr D E G Hosking of Hayle at the same money.

A pair of South Devon cows tied at 248p/kg thereafter; one being from Messrs A R & T S Hooper of Shortlanesend, Truro and the other from Mr C Weldhen.

Dairy types to 225p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston and another Friesian cow from the same farm at 222p/kg thereafter.

The best Friesian cow from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro topped at 220p/kg.

Store Cattle

A grand entry for the time of year of 208, selling on yet another fine trade to a top call of £2220 for a cracking 25-month-old Hereford steer from Mr O Hicks of Zelah, Truro who sold Limousins thereafter to £2180, a further Hereford to £2120, Blues to £2030 and Anguses to £1945.

A super entry of 1½-year-old Shorthorns up from Mr J B W Bennetts of Ruan Minor, The Lizard topped at £2130 for a choice steer, with further lots to £1910, £1740 and £1640 with 1-year-olds thereafter to £1555 and £1200.

Mr D P Anderson of St Buryan, Penzance sold a pair of 31-month-old Blue steers to £2000, whilst 1½-year-old Angus steers from Messrs R G Keast & Son of Allet, Truro achieved £1920.

Younger steers to £1990 on behalf of Mr L Bruce of Constantine, Falmouth for his single 15-month-old Charolais followed by Mr C Weldhen of St Columb at £1920 for his 13-month-old South Devon.

A pair of 9-month-old Charolais steers from Mr K R Williams of Tehidy, Camborne looked well sold at £1305, whilst a grand bunch of six 7-month-old South Devons from Messrs A M & V R Pascoe of Gweek, Helston realised £1000 apiece.

Heifers coming in at £2175 on behalf of Mr O Hicks, who sold further strong heifers to £1980, whilst Mr C Weldhen sold an 18-month-old Limousin to £2160.

Smart 1½-year-old heifers in from Messrs T W & W T James of Sancreed, Penzance and Messrs W H B Stevens and Daughter of Helston achieving £1610 and £1500 respectively, whilst the best of the young heifers came from Mr C Weldhen with a super trio of 15-month-olds at £1980.

Mr L Bruce sold a single Limousin to £1490 whilst a 14-month-old Hereford from Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son of Hewaswater, St Austell parted away at £945.

Cows and calves topping at £1950 on behalf of Messrs D G Lambrick & Son of St Keverne, Helston.

Rearing Calves

Good numbers of calves forward again, with the best of the entry selling away on a strong trade to the ringside full of buyers.

Top call of £660 for a strong month-old Blue bull calf from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston, with their Simmental bulls at £465 and £395 and two Limousins at £440 and £390.

A strong month-old Blue bull from Messrs R J, K M, A M & S E Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston realised £650 and the best Charolais bull forward from Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth at £360.

Angus bulls at one month old to £290 for a good calf from Messrs A G Cave & Son of Rame and their other pair of the same age and breed to £245 twice.

Heifers to £325 for a good month-old Blue from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston, a same-aged Blue heifer from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston at £320 and a Limousin from Messrs Bray at £315.

A tidy Charolais heifer from Messrs H L, T & C Lyne of St Clement, Truro parted away at £280 and the best Angus heifer made £175 from Messrs Cave.

A cracking bunch of four Blue steer stirks forward from Messrs R N & D Jenkin realised £760.

This was followed by part of the dispersal sale on behalf of Messrs W L Jasper & Son of Morvah, Penzance seeing prices at £555 for Hereford steers and Angus steers to £465.

Prime Lambs

A good entry forward and a large quality of heavy butchers’ lambs which saw prices peak at £175 for a 72.3kg Blue Texel from Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Leading the averages at 347p/kg for meaty 38.5kg lambs from Mr R A Coade of Cubert purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

A superb trade for cull ewes again this week which was a credit to Vendors and with Buyers still seeking more to fulfil their orders.

Prices peaked at £209 for a cracking pair of Charollais from Mr D J A Eyles of Ladock, Truro.

Further pens from the same Vendor to £189, £179 and £171, and further Charollais to £166 for Mr J D Couch of Lostwithiel.

Texels to £186 for the best of a run from Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay; £171 for Mr C Gadsby of St Austell; £168 for Messrs J A & C S M Tripconey of St Keverne, Helston; £168 for Messrs A D & W D Brown of Lostwithiel; £167 for Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Truro; and £157.50 again for Messrs Jones.

Suffolks to £180 for a showy pair from Messrs C P & K L Wearne of Wendron, Helston and £160 again for Messrs Tripconey. Suffolk X to £144 for Miss M Thomas of St Ives.

Dorsets to £141 for Messrs Ansell Bros. of Ludgvan, Penzance. Rams to £195 twice, both for superb Charollais again from Mr Eyles.

Sheep (2T) to £146 twice, firstly a cross-bred from Messrs A D & W D Brown of Lostwithiel, and secondly a Texel X from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge.

These were followed by a trio of Zwartbles X again from Messrs Ansell at £140. Vendors are strongly encouraged to market ewes on the current strong trade, which saw an overall average this week of £133.50.

Store Sheep

Another sizeable entry of 170 selling to an average of £110, though perhaps a slightly dearer trade on the week with a higher proportion of plainer types going under the hammer.

Top call on the day of £144 for a strong Charollais x single from Mr D J Tremain of St Columb, followed by a fine pen from Mr and Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay realising £134.

Smart lambs from Miss L Baker of Callestick achieved £130 and £127, whilst a cracking pen of 11 up from Mr J Mc Fadden of St Just, Penzance parted away at £130.

Best of another good run from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb achieved 116, with Mr Shazell also selling a 2T Char-Tex ram to £230.
