Prime Cattle

A numerous entry of prime cattle forward, with a good showing of overall quality but no real top end premium sorts presented.

Top of the day to 380p/kg for a strong Limousin heifer from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro, followed by a Limousin heifer from Mr R E Richards of St Keverne, Helston at 378p/kg and the best South Devon heifer from Messrs I C & W P Lobb of St Ewe at 375p/kg thereafter.

An Angus heifer from Messrs A R, B & A Hosking of St Martin, Helston was one bid behind at 374p/kg, whilst a Charolais steer from Messrs E A & A R Thomas of Sevenmilestone, Truro realised 367p/kg.

A good run of mainly Blues from Messrs L T Harvey & Sons of Newbridge, Penzance topped at 365p/kg for their best 710kg steer and a young Angus steer from Messrs Hosking traded at 362p/kg.

Cull Cows

The strong trade for cull animals prevails, with the mainly beef-type entry looking very well sold.

Top honours awarded to a strong Limousin cow from Mr R E Richards of St Keverne, Helston at 325p/kg (£2,334), followed by a Limousin cow forward from Mr R I P Andrew of Coverack, Helston at 289p/kg (£2,055), a weighty 809kg Blue cow from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne was one bid behind at 288p/kg (£2,330) and their good 871kg Limousin cow at 281p/kg (£2,448) thereafter.

The best Shorthorn cow from Mr R J Trezise of Morvah, Penzance at 277p/kg and then his Angus cow at 268p/kg, the latter tied with a South Devon cow from Messrs I C & W P Lobb of St Ewe at the same money.

Dairy types to 259p/kg (£2,385) for a Swedish Red & White cow from Messrs B L Hearn & Partners of Whitecross, with a Friesian cow from the same farm at 255p/kg thereafter. An Angus bull from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons made £3,379.

Store Cattle

A good trade for another cracking entry, topping at £2350 for the best of a supreme run of 21-month-old South Devon steers on behalf of Mr T G Hawke of Colan, Newquay.

Mr Hawke sold further lots to £2340, £2330 and £2300 with a total of fifteen steers going under the hammer to an average of £2280.

Messrs R G Keast and Son of Allet, Truro sold a cracking pair of 18-month-old Angus steers to £2145, followed by a 31-month-old Limousin from Mr O Hicks of Zelah, Truro at £2045 and 2-year-old Anguses from the same farm to £2000.

Messrs W H B Stevens & Daughter of The Lizard sold a single 19-month-old Hereford to £1975 with further Herefords to £1710, whilst Messrs S & L Awdry of Truro sold a 27-monthold Angus steer to £1860.

Younger steers to £1460 for a grand bunch of five 15-month-old Herefords from Messrs R G Olver & Son of St Stephen, followed by a trio of 9-month-old Limousins from Messrs M & R Rowe of Ashton, Helston at £1180.

Heifers topping for smart 2-year-olds from Mr O Hicks at £2010, £1975, £1680 and £1630.

A trio of 16-month-old Devons from Mr A J C Parker of Tregavethan, Truro realised £1770 with younger types thereafter to £1000 on behalf of Mr B E Richards of Porkellis, Helston and £945 and £940 for Messrs M & J Rowe and Ms E MacAulay of Constantine, Falmouth respectively.

Rearing Calves

A quality entry of calves and stirks forward this week, which were met with keen bidding and a captivating trade.

Topping the bull calves was a strong month old Limousin from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston at £495, followed by a same-aged Limousin bull from Neil Rowe Farming Ltd of The Lizard, Helston at £480 and others from the same stable at £440 for a Blue and £435 for a Limo.

A quality run of slightly older Blue calves from Messrs S & S F Cotterill of St Michael Penkivel, Truro saw their bulls trade at £460, £430 and £375, and the best Blue bulls from Messrs J A H Wood & Son of Little Petherick, Wadebridge parting away at £460 and £455.

A single month old Angus bull from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro at £370 and the best Hereford bull of the day to £355 for Messrs A & B Pascoe of North Country, Redruth.

Heifers also selling to a strong demand with a cracking 26 day old Simmental from Messrs L W & S Hosken of St Keverne, Helston at £435 and a pair of three month old Blue heifers from Messrs Wood at £425.

Another month-old Simmental heifer, this time from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston, went under the hammer at £420.

Messrs Cotterill continued their run with good Blue heifers at £375 and £360 twice. Two other heifers tied at £360 being two month-old Limousins; one from Messrs Blee and the other from Messrs Bray.

Another strong entry of 4 to 5 month old Blue stirks from W P & J Jenkin Ltd of St Martin, Helston saw the best pair of steers racing away to £850 and £815 for another trio, with Messrs E T Noy & Sons of Porkellis, Helston selling a pair of Blues at £810.

Messrs Cotterill filled the ring with 5 of their weaned Blue bulls at £795 and also topped the heifers with a pair at £595.

Prime Lambs

A lively trade, with the fleshed heavies in demand, selling to a top price of £160 for a trio of 55.6kg lambs from Mr M Monk of Truro. Setting the premium at 345p/kg were shapely handy weights from Mr J D Couch of Lostwithiel, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

Numbers are tight this week, with many more needed to satisfy buyer requirements.

A CharTex ram from Miss Rachel Bromage of Falmouth topped at £168.00. This was followed by another from the same vendor at £157.00. Two pens of sheep (2T) from Messrs Ansell Bros of Penzance also at £157.00 twice.

A Charollais ram from Mr P G Gilbert at £147.00. North of England Mule ewes to £137.00 for Mr G C Grigg of Veryan, Truro and £129.50 for Mr A S P Wright of Truro.

Store Sheep

A tremendous entry of 280 store lamb selling to an overall average of £115 to a large contingent of keen buyers.

The trade topped at £137 for a strong, close to finish pen from Mr & Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay followed by the best pens from a quality consignment in from Mr T Hall of Bodmin, achieving £130.50 and £128.

Lambs from Maxco Farms of Truro and Caerhays Farms of St Austell realised £124.50, whilst smart continental pens from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb sold to £122, £119 & £117.50 and £117.

Good consignments also in from Mr R Halliday of Liskeard, Mr G Symons of Truro and Mr E Whiteman of St Austell, all looking well sold. Medium term types to £113 for Mr C Hatch of Liskeard.

Very few stores trading for less than £100 and the overwhelming majority sitting between £105 & £120. A further 65 consigned by Mrs A Shazell for next week.
