Prime Cattle
Another good quality entry of Prime Cattle forward with the best of the entry still commanding top prices.
Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro taking top honours with their Parthenais x steer at 410p/kg, followed by a cracking 688kg Limousin heifer from Mr R H Eddy of Tehidy, Camborne at 402p/kg (£2,766).
Mr N J Bennetts of Zelah, Truro saw his Blue heifer part away at 390p/kg, an OTM Limousin heifer from Mr Eddy at 388p/kg (£2,712) and another pair of Parthenais x steers from Messrs Williams at 380p/kg and 372p/kg.
Further steers to 370p/kg for a Charolais from Messrs E A & A R Thomas of Sevenmilestone, Truro and 368p/kg for an 809kg Limousin steer from Mr Eddy, which also took top pounds-per-head at £2,977.
Cull Cows
The cull section would look a similar trade to recent weeks, if not slightly improved.
Top of the day to 300p/kg for a good Angus cow from Messrs S & L Awdry of Trendeal, Truro, followed by a cow-aged Devon steer from Mr C J Parr of St Austell at 298p/kg tied with a Limousin cow from Mr T Alford of Boskednan, Penzance at the same money.
A good South Devon cow from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro sold away at 297p/kg, also tied with another Angus cow from Messrs Awdry.
A Blue cow from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne realised 294p/kg, a Blue cow from Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro at 292p/kg and a weighty South Devon cow from Laity Farms of Gwinear, Hayle at 291p/kg.
Dairy types to 289p/kg and 260p/kg for a pair of cow-aged Ayrshire steers from Mr Parr, followed by a trio of Friesian heifers from Gwealavellan Partners of Gwithian, Hayle at 261p/kg, 258p/kg and 251p/kg.
Store Cattle
A substantial entry to report as we begin to see the first signs of Spring with a super trade from start to finish.
The steers topped at £2245 for a cracking trio of 26-month-old Charolais on behalf of R M Farming & Co of Sticker, who sold a further Simmental to £2065 and Limousins to £1890, whilst 2-year-old steers from Messrs A J & S T Richards of Helston realised £2205 for Herefords and £2140 for Charolais.
Messrs W W James & Sons of Sancreed, Penzance sold 2-year-old Blues to £2020 with further good steers thereafter from Messrs Richards to £1960 and £1890.
A 1½-year-old Limousin from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro parted away at £1905, whilst young steers traded to a top call of £2065 for a superb quartet of 1-year-old Angus on behalf of Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne.
12-month-old Limos in from Mr R Rowe of Penhallow, Truro sold to £1790 and £1730, followed by young Limos from Mr J F Rowe of Par, St Austell to £1620 twice.
A trio of 13-month-old South Devon steers from Messrs W L House & Son of Quintrell Downs, Newquay parted at £1560.
Heifers to £2075 for a fleshy 2-year-old South Devon on behalf of James Eustice Farms of St Ervan, Wadebridge followed by Messrs W S Gay & Son at £1725 and Mr J F Rowe at £1700.
Blues to £1690 on behalf of Messrs W W James & Sons, Herefords to £1635 on behalf of Mr E J Harris of Wendron, Helston and Limos to £1580 on behalf of Mr M D Wearne of Wendron, Helston.
Younger heifers trading to £1495 for a premium trio of Limousins on behalf of Mr R Rowe who sold a further pair to £1435 and followed by Mr J F Rowe at £1400 for his 1-year-old single Limo.
1-year-old Herefords to £1310 on behalf of Messrs V J & K J Reynolds of Nancegollan, Helston, Blondes to £1285 on behalf of Messrs E T Noy & Sons of Porkellis, Helston and South Devons to £1280 on behalf of Messrs W L House & Son.
A 3½-year-old Limousin bull from Mr D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston sold for £2850.
Rearing Calves
A good entry of calves and stirks to report, with a flying trade for all on offer.
Top in the section for a heifer calf this week at £675 for a cracking 4-month-old Blue from Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston, with a Blue steer from the same farm at £670, tied with a 3-month-old Angus steer from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston at the same money.
Messrs J R, P M & D W Treleaven of Trenarren, St Austell saw their pair of good 3-month-old Hereford steers at £625 and their Blue steer also at the same money.
Mr J Wilkinson of Constantine, Falmouth saw a fast trade for his young 2-month-old Charolais bull calf racing away to £620 and a Limousin steer from Messrs Treleaven at £595 thereafter.
3-month-old Angus steers from Mr N Monies of Zennor, St Ives to £560 twice and a young month-old Angus bull from J O Nightingale Limited of Whitecross, Wadebridge at £495.
A cracking bunch of 3-month-old Angus heifers from Messrs Jenkin at £565 twice and £545 twice, with a same aged Angus heifer from Messrs Worden at £500.
Sixty Acres Ltd of Zelah, Truro selling their best month-old Limousin heifer to £455 and a 2-month-old Charolais heifer from Mr Wilkinson at £430, followed by a month-old Blue heifer from Sixty Acres at £410.
A run of real quality in the stirks starting with a pair of 6-month-old Hereford steers from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro at £795, 6-month-old Limousins at £750 twice and four Hereford steers from Messrs Treleaven at £700.
A single 9-month-old Angus steer from Mr C S Nankervis of Amalveor, St Ives looked well sold at £680, a pair of 8-month-old Angus at £560 and a 6-month-old Friesian steer trading at £540. Heifer stirks also topped by Messrs Grylls with a trio of 6-month-old Limos at £795.
Finished Hoggetts
A decent entry forward, with every shape and size on offer. A firm trade across the board, with strong demand.
Setting the premium at 334p/kg were a smart trio of medium weights for Messrs SB & M Tonkin of Par, sold to RJ Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
Three pens selling away at £170 and all purchased by JV Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station, with the heavyweights commanding top money.
Firstly, for a 68kg Texel from William and Henry Eustice of St Ervan. Also achieving top money for a single enormous 78kg hogg from Messrs JC Eddy & Son of Kehelland.
Last but by no means least, a choice 70kg butchers hogg from Messrs PT & PE Jones also at £170, being the best of 5 pens from the same vendor.
New Season Lamb
Our first consignment of new season lambs for the year were a smart pen of shapely 40.6kg Dorset lambs from Messrs MG & TA Tuckett of Par, which sold to £154 and 379p/kg, purchased by JV Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Cull Ewes
A lighter entry and many more required to satisfy buyer demand.
Cull rams to £148.50 for a Suffolk x from Messrs S B & M Tonkin of Par. Medium Charollais and Charollais x ewes to £148 and £138 from Mr B Cowell of Helston.
Medium Dorsets to £147 from Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par. Medium Suffolks to £138 from Mrs J C Williams of Truro.
Suffolk Mules to £133 from Mr J McFadden of St Just, Penzance and £129.50 for Messrs W P L Cowling & Sons of Newquay. 2T (Sheep) to £131 for a Suffolk Mule again from Messrs Cowling.
Store Sheep
A light entry topping at £129 for smart lambs from Messrs K S & L Dodd of Truro, followed by a pen of well-presented pedigree Lleyn ewe lambs from Mr D & Mrs S Searle of Wendron, Helston, realising £128.
Overall average £112. A double couple in from Mrs R Disney of Fraddon achieved £222.
In Lamb Ewes
This week saw two cracking consignments of scanned in-lamb ewes, selling on a strong trade with plenty of keen bidding.
A genuine flock dispersal in from Hoskin Partnership of St Austell saw 2T and 4T scanned doubles to £220, 6T and FM scanned doubles to £205 twice and 2T and 4T scanned singles to £205 also.
Smart Cheviot x Mule ewe lambs in from Messrs J C Salmon & Son of Newquay, saw pens of scanned singles to £222 and £220, with scanned doubles thereafter to £220, £215 and £210.
